The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (Aug. 3) ratified the appointment of Dr. Suresh Mittal as Distinguished Professor of Virology in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine and Purdue University share a special heritage with 2019 marking the College’s 60th anniversary and the University’s sesquicentennial. In both cases, special celebrations are planned over the course of the coming months.

Dr. Audrey Ruple, assistant professor of one health epidemiology, had a goal of creating a learning opportunity for students that would help make the concept of One Health, which they learned about in the classroom, more tangible. This summer was the first time that Purdue veterinary students had the opportunity to participate in her three-week program involving travel to London and South Africa. The six veterinary students were able to see and experience the issues involved in One Health firsthand rather than just learning about it as a theory.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s 2018 Veterinary Scholars Summer Research Program (SRP) gave 21 DVM and pre-veterinary students first-hand experience working with faculty on a wide variety of research projects. The program is designed to provide students the opportunity to work on independent research projects and explore non-practice careers by being partnered with faculty members who share mutual areas of interest.

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine welcomed new and familiar faces this summer as interns and first-year residents arrived at Lynn Hall. The newest class of interns started at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and Centaur Equine Specialty Hospital in June. The new residents began their orientation in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) in July.

The importance of honey bees to U.S. agriculture production was reflected in the success of a workshop on bee medicine hosted jointly by Purdue Veterinary Medicine and the Purdue University College of Agriculture’s Department of Entomology July 27. The program combined lectures and hands-on learning opportunities to enlighten attendees about the veterinarian’s role in beekeeping and provide veterinarians with the skills needed to work with beekeeping clients.
