Surgical Equipment Donation Enhances Learning for Purdue Veterinary Students

Thanks to a connection between Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and an orthopedic surgeon at Logansport Memorial Hospital in Logansport, Ind., third-year Purdue veterinary students now have more opportunities to learn first-hand about using electrosurgical equipment in surgery. The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine recently took possession of several electrosurgical units that were donated by the Logansport Memorial Hospital.


Heeke Lab Joins Statewide Veterinary Partnership to Help the Hellbender

Due to pollution and habitat erosion, the eastern hellbender population is on a rapid decline in the United States. The plight of the Hellbender salamander is a fascinating tale of survival aided by veterinary specialists collaborating with wildlife biologists. The staff at the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory’s (ADDL) Heeke Lab, located at the Southern Indiana Purdue Agricultural Center near Dubois, Ind., joined this effort as part of the ADDL’s mission to provide vital veterinary diagnostic testing to Indiana and the rest of the United States through diagnosis of diseases, discovery of new knowledge and dissemination of that knowledge for animal medicine and research.


PVM Alumnus Shares Experience with the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program

Dr. Brandon Miller (PU DVM 2014) was searching for a way to stay in Indiana while repaying his veterinary school student debt when he came across the USDA Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP). The USDA administers the federally funded VMLRP, which offers loan forgiveness to veterinarians who commit to serving at least three years in underserved areas. Dr. Miller began applying for and researching the VMLRP program during his fourth year of veterinary school at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.

College Prepares for 60th Anniversary Celebration

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2019. “It’s hard to believe that our 60th Anniversary is less than a year away, when it seems like only a couple of years ago we were celebrating our 50th,” PVM Dean Willie Reed said. “To prepare for this next milestone in our College’s history, I have assembled a 60th Anniversary Committee to plan a variety of celebratory activities.” The committee includes faculty, staff, students, and alumni, and is chaired by Dr. Jim Weisman (PU DVM ’97), assistant dean for student affairs and clinical associate professor.


Dr. Kathleen Salisbury Named Purdue 150th Anniversary Professor
