Raymond E. Plue Outstanding Teacher Award

Dr. Raymond E. Plue (PU ‘68) initiated this award in 1993 at the time of the Annual Fall Conference with a gift of $65,000. His intention is to recognize and reward truly outstanding teachers. Purpose To reward individuals who are outstanding teachers, scholars and role models for students.

Criteria for Nomination

  1. The Alumni Liaison Committee will solicit nominations from those DVM alumni of the School of Veterinary Medicine graduating in the past three years.
  2. Any teacher who instructed DVM students is eligible for nomination (selection is not limited to DVM program faculty).
  3. The recipient must be teaching at the university at the time the award is to be presented.
  4. Nominations will be based on an evaluation of the individual in the following areas:
    1. Reasonable consideration of the prospective recipient’s honesty, integrity, gentleness, humility, humanity, and empathy for the student, client, and animal.
    2. Recipient’s understanding of the importance of his or her attitudes on a student’s learning.
    3. Recipient’s effort at instilling professionalism in students.
    4. Recipient’s willingness to always make time for fostering questioning by students.
    5. Recipient’s competency as a principal research investigator interfacing basic sciences and clinics; recipient should be actively conducting research in the field in which he or she teaches.
    6. Recipient’s ability to teach the fundamentals of research design and methodology.
    7. Recipient’s ability to demonstrate up-to-date knowledge and enthusiasm for his or her area of science.
    8. Recipient’s effectiveness as a role model for lifetime learning.
    9. Recipient’s ability to instill enthusiasm in students in their disciplines, encourage and instill a love for lifetime learning and advocate advanced degree work.

Procedures for Nomination and Selection

  1. At the conclusion of the academic year, the Alumni Liaison Committee Shall solicit nominations for this award from those DVM alumni of the School of Veterinary Medicine graduating in the past three years.
  2. The alumni shall evaluate each nominee on the criteria listed above.
  3. The awardee should have letters of nomination supporting each and every one of the criteria and factors listed above.
  4. The Alumni Liaison Committee will forward their recommendation of the award recipient to the Dean of the School for approval by August 1.
  5. The award will be presented at the Annual Fall Conference.
  6. There will be no more than one recipient of the award for any academic year.
  7. If no qualified recipient can be identified for any given academic year, then no award shall be given for that year, and the amount of the award shall be added to the principal of the endowment.

Award

1. The award will consist of the full interest on the endowment.
