PVM Reed-Klinker Exemplary Community Partnership Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize mutually-beneficial community partnerships among Indiana nonprofits, schools, or government units and the College of Veterinary Medicine that result in community capacity-building while advancing the college’s learning, discovery, and engagement missions. The award shall be known as the “Reed-Klinker Exemplary Community Partnership Award,” and given annually.

The award is named after Dr. Willie M. Reed, Dean Emeritus of the College of Veterinary Medicine, who established the college’s Office of Engagement in recognition of the importance of university-community partnerships, and State Representative Sheila Klinker, a strong ally and advocate for the college’s engagement efforts within the State of Indiana.

Nominations

Nominations are due 03/10/2025.

Eligibility

  1. Partnerships must be among The College of Veterinary Medicine (e.g., faculty, staff, students) and community partners (e.g., not-for-profit organizations, public schools, or governmental units) that result in community capacity-building while advancing the college’s learning, discovery, or engagement missions.
  2. Partnerships must involve the disciplinary expertise of faculty and staff, or the education of students, as part of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s missions. Personal endeavors are not eligible.
  3. Community partners must be located within the State of Indiana.
  4. Partnerships receiving this award shall be ineligible for reconsideration for the following 5 years.

Criteria for Selection

  1. Any community partners (as defined above in the Eligibility section) and faculty, staff, and students at the College of Veterinary Medicine may nominate a partnership. Self-nominations are welcome.
  2. No more than one award shall be given in any year.
  3. The partnership should exemplify Purdue University’s Engagement Protocol including the following elements:
    • Community need(s) are addressed by the partnership with benefits to all partners.
    • Roles and expectations of each partner are well-defined, and include processes for communication, leadership, power sharing, and decision-making that promote active, representative, and respectful collaboration.
    • Resources (i.e., expertise, physical, financial, volunteer, etc.) are contributed by each partner to build capacity within the community to address a community need.
    • There is evidence of sustained commitment, collaboration, and willingness to learn and grow together while working toward the long-term sustainability and well-being of the community.

Nomination Document

  1. The nomination document should not exceed 4 pages, no smaller than 12-point font, and no less than 1” margins.
  2. The nomination should contain all of the following components:
    1. Description of the community need(s) addressed by the partnership, including how each partner benefits from the collaboration.
    2. Description of the roles and expectations of each partner, including processes for communication, leadership, power sharing, and decision-making that promote active, representative, and respectful collaboration.
    3. Description of the resources (i.e., expertise, physical, financial, volunteer, etc.) contributed by each partner to build capacity within the community to address a community need.
    4. Evidence of sustained commitment, collaboration, and willingness to learn and grow together while working toward the long-term sustainability and well-being of the community.
  3. Evidence of scholarship (i.e., publications, presentations, policies) or excellence (i.e., awards, funding) resulting from the partnership is encouraged but not required.

Procedures

  1. A nomination form will be distributed by the Office of Engagement each year.
  2. An ad hoc committee appointed by the Dean will serve as the screening committee and include at least one college and community member. The screening committee will review the documents of nominees and recommend none or a maximum of three individuals (listed alphabetically) to the Deans’ Committee (Dean and Associate Deans).
  3. The Deans’ Committee (Dean and Associate Deans) will make the final selection. Where applicable, Assistant Deans may be involved in the final decision-making process. A nominee who is a member of the Deans’ Committee shall not participate in the selection process.
  4. In case there are no nominations, or if in the opinion of the Screening and/or Deans’ Committee the nominees are not deserving of the award, no award will be made that year.

The Award

The award shall consist of:

  1. A payment of $1,000 to be used to further the partnership. These funds will be deposited in a university account and must be used within 2 years after which they will revert to college funds.
  2. A recognition from the State of Indiana.
