Six major steps
Veterinary schools do not require one specific major. Choose a field that interests you, supports strong academic performance, and gives you other career options while you complete the required prerequisite courses.
Students may prepare through animal science, biology, biochemistry, engineering, or many other majors as long as they complete the required coursework.
Build a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, communication, and the humanities. Requirements vary among veterinary schools, so review each program carefully.
Learn what veterinary medicine is really like through animal experience, veterinary experience under a veterinarian’s supervision, employment, research, leadership, and community involvement.
Focus on the quality and variety of your experiences. Reflect on what you observed, how you contributed, what challenged you, and what you learned.
Use the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) to submit your academic record, experiences, recommendations, essays, and other application materials to participating veterinary programs.

At Purdue, students progress from understanding the healthy animal and foundational sciences to disease, diagnosis, treatment, clinical preparation, and a fourth year devoted entirely to clinical rotations.
After earning the DVM, graduates must pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination and meet the requirements of the state or jurisdiction where they plan to practice.
Some graduates enter practice immediately. Others continue into internships, residencies, graduate education, research, or specialized professional training.
