These are a list of services offered by the Donald J. McCrosky Equine Sports Medicine Center at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.
This horse is part of a research project to determine whether a specific drug has any effect on a horse’s performance. The video shows an exercise test where we increase speed every minute and while collecting blood from an IV catheter at different time points. We record how long the horse can run before reaching fatigue, i.e. can’t keep up with treadmill speed, then we stop the treadmill and allow the horse to recover at a slow jog. Heart rate and electrocardiogram (ECG) are monitored closely throughout the test to detect any cardiovascular abnormalities.
