My Story
I grew up on a dairy farm in Jamaica. My dad, a veterinary technician during my early childhood years, would pick me up from school and we would travel around the parish attending to farm calls. Those early memories really inspired my interest in veterinary medicine.
My Struggles
The expense of applying for veterinary school and the interview process really limited the number of schools I could apply to.

My Heroes
I have had so many role models along the way from my parents who instilled in me the meaning behind hard work and dedication. My dad’s passion for veterinary medicine and love of animals was the start of my career. He taught important life lessons by having me observe animal behavior on the farm. Dr. Monica Fernandez was the first veterinarian who took an interest in me and helped me pave my way to University of Florida where I did my undergraduate studies.
My Typical Day
Well right now, I am on maternity leave and taking care of a beautiful baby boy. My day is consumed with daily feeding, diaper changes and trying to console a human that cannot speak. Interestingly, as a veterinarian we have to rely on our ability to read nonverbal cues which is what I rely heavily on as a mother. Though, I can’t wait to teach him sign language so that we can communicate more effectively.

My Stressors
The fear of the unknown is a major stressor both at work and at home. I have to remind myself that the fear of the unknown is not to paralyze me it is there to remind me that I have more to learn. I manage my stressors by doing things that I love, that is find a hobby and pursue it as passionately as you did with your career.
My Why
I love helping people. The more time I have spent in this profession, I have come to realize that I am more connected to the families of the animals that I take care of.
