My Story

I always wanted to do something with animals. I considered ocean science, zoology… if it was outside and with animals, it made the list. In high school, I was lucky enough to get a position as a junior volunteer at the local aquarium and zoo. The connections I made there exposed me to all kinds of animal related occupations, and it was when I met the veterinarians that I knew I had found what I wanted to do.

My Struggles

Veterinary school was not easy for me. The material was interesting, but there was so much of it and the surroundings were so (literally) foreign. There were several times when I wondered if I could, or should, do it. It took great mentors to help me realize my potential. I am forever grateful for the encouragement that I received along the way.

My Heroes

First and foremost would be my parents. They were instrumental in teaching me the importance of hard work and perseverance, and they always provided unwavering support and love. I was also fortunate to have numerous educational heroes along the way. Each played different roles at different times in my life; they were able to show me the possibilities within veterinary medicine, welcome me as a colleague, and teach me that I belonged.

My Typical Day

If I’m lucky I am in the operating room! More recently, I am in a classroom or laboratory assisting veterinary students with surgical skills and techniques. I also conduct veterinary research, so there is a lot of reading and writing that I do every day.

My Stressors

I have a very long to do list! I try to keep myself organized and make daily lists in order of priority to keep myself on track. Along with that stressor comes the feeling of needing to do it all, which can be very draining. Luckily veterinary medicine is a team sport and I trust that my team will be able to deliver the best quality of veterinary medicine for the patients and top notch veterinary education to our students.

My Why

The variety! No day is the same, but every day I get the chance to help someone.
