PVM Alumna Receives Prestigious ACVS Award

This year’s American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Surgery Summit featured the announcement of the recipients of a trio of prestigious awards, and one of the award winners is a Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna. Dr. Karen Cornell (PU DVM ’88; PhD ’98) was selected by the ACVS Board of Regents as the recipient of the 2024 Al and Carolyn Schiller Distinguished Service Award, which was presented at the conference October 24 in Pheonix, Arizona.


PVM’s Expanding Opportunities for Global Learning Highlighted at Annual Global Engagement Fair

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s ongoing efforts to emphasize and provide opportunities for Purdue Veterinary Medicine students to study abroad as part of their veterinary education are bearing fruit, and those results were on display recently at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Global Engagement Fair. Held in the Veterinary Medical Library in Lynn Hall October 18, the evening reception and program highlighted expanding global engagement opportunities and increasing levels of participation in study abroad options available to both DVM and veterinary nursing students.

Former BMS Professor and GeniPhys Founder Sees Continued Success in Development of Wound Management Product

GeniPhys, a preclinical-stage company founded by a Purdue University researcher with ties to the College of Veterinary Medicine, is expected to commercialize a wound management product in the second quarter of 2025 that involves developing regenerative collagen polymeric biomaterials for soft tissue restoration.  Collymer SAS was developed by Sherry Harbin, a Purdue professor of biomedical engineering and former professor (now professor by courtesy appointment) in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences.

Building on Scholarly Excellence, Veterinary Medicine Postdoc Researcher Pursues Solutions to Global Crisis in Countering Antibiotic Resistance, Superbugs

Years of growing resistance to antibiotics have sparked an urgent global health crisis, giving rise to challenging biological threats and the emergence of more dangerous viral, fungal and bacterial strains, commonly called superbugs. Compounding the threat is the difficulty in a quick diagnosis, complicating how to effectively treat these illnesses. Purdue postdoctoral researcher Sharath Iyengar in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences spends hours in the G221 laboratory at Lynn Hall, seeking answers to this health challenge.

PVM Ensures that Animal Health is Included in Purdue’s Healthy Boiler Fair

When the Purdue Memorial Union Ballroom doors opened for the Healthy Boiler Fair recently, the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital was among the Purdue services and departments represented.  The event on Wednesday, October 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., featured an exhibit area that included tables and displays staffed by more than 30 vendors and departments from Purdue and the community.


Students Honored for Completing Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program

Nearly 30 students were recognized this week at the start of the Current Issues in Veterinary Medicine class held on Tuesday, October 15 for their achievement in earning the Certificate for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine.  The certificate is offered through an online program that involves a combination of learning modules, activity assignments, a volunteer community service assignment, and a capstone paper.
