Student Landscape Project Benefits Animals at Purdue Veterinary Hospital

A student-led landscape redesign project has taken root at Purdue University, in the form of outdoor upgrades at the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital. Originally developed by Mary Schultz, a graduating senior in the College of Agriculture’s Horticulture and Landscape Architecture program, the project reimagined outdoor spaces used for animal recovery, training, and enrichment. This summer, the hospital implemented one of the recommendations, which involved replacing natural turf in an outdoor dog run with a new synthetic material.

PVM Toxicologist’s Warning about Poisonous Mushrooms Aids Pet Owners Locally and Nationally

They’re known as “Death Cap Mushrooms” and for good reason – Dr. Steve Hooser, Purdue Veterinary Medicine professor of toxicology and senior veterinary toxicologist at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, says they can be fatal for dogs. Dr. Hooser says the mushrooms, scientifically known as Amanita spp., have appeared in yards and fields across central Indiana.
Lifesaving Purdue Veterinary Care for Oliver the Cat Leads Grateful Client to Give Back

It was 2023 when Sam Elomar, of Hobart, Indiana, brought his six-year-old cat Oliver to the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital for care that he now believes saved Oliver’s life. In appreciation, Sam chose to give back by making a gift to the hospital, sharing his gratitude in a meaningful way that reflects the care, compassion, and expertise he and Oliver received at Purdue.
Third Antimicrobial Resistance Conference Brings Interdisciplinary Scholars Together at Purdue

Attendance figures for Purdue University’s third Antimicrobial Resistance Conference demonstrate increasing interest in the event’s interdisciplinary approach to the topic that the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies as one of the top global public health and development threats. The conference last month at Purdue’s Stewart Center featured distinguished keynote speakers and Purdue scholars from a variety of disciplines who shared the latest research findings and insights regarding the challenges posed by antibiotic resistance.
Lucy’s Story

When an eight-year-old shepherd-mix dog named Lucy was injured after tragically getting struck by a car, co-parents Matt and Gretchen Walker were told that she would likely never walk again. That was over three years ago, in May of 2021. The Walkers, of Brookston, Indiana, had raised Lucy since she was a puppy, and knew that her life was nothing short of worth fighting for. “If she was willing to live, I was willing to do whatever it took,” Matt said as he recounted the story recently.

On the south end of Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus during the spring semester, a critical battle unfolded inside the Willie M. Reed Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory – a high-stakes hub where veterinary diagnostic experts served as disease detectives and every sample was a potential clue in stopping an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on Indiana farms.
Werling Center Dedication Ceremony Celebrates a Name with a Tale

Like the beginning of a beloved children’s story, the tale of the inception of a new Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine center devoted to comparative cancer research and treatment starts with a scene involving an adorable dog named Brandi. That scene was shared recently via a video played during a special ceremony attended by college supporters, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and relatives and friends of the family for whom the center is named. The event was the official dedication of the Evan and Sue Ann Werling Comparative Oncology Research Center May 23, 2025, which was held outside Lynn Hall near the entrance that leads to the new center’s reception area.
