Purdue Farm Animal Hospital clinicians put out the welcome mat on a recent Saturday morning for goat and sheep producers from across Indiana who were looking for practical help and guidance in their roles as commercial and show stock producers. A special half-day Small Ruminant Producer Workshop hosted by the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital on November 23 attracted more than 60 attendees, representing 28 farms.

Thanks to Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Exotic Animal Club and dedicated faculty, staff and students, nearly 100 in-person and on-line participants got a chance recently to gain valuable knowledge and insight about the Medicine of Mammalian and Avian Species. The two-day educational event known as the MMAS Symposium is a biennial conference, and the 2024 edition held in Lynn Hall November 9 and 10 featured an impressive program that included 22 lectures and several hands-on labs, organized into two tracks focusing on avian and mammalian species.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Student Success Center is pleased to welcome Kelsey Luse Spille, who joined the team Monday, November 4, as a learning specialist. In her new role, she will be supporting students with their academic needs while also serving as a member of the Veterinary Education Support Team (VEST), which assists faculty in developing inclusive teaching practices.

Faculty, staff and students gathered at a reception in the Veterinary Medical Library Friday, November 8, to help extend a warm welcome the new dean of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Bret Marsh. The event marked the conclusion of the first week on the job for Dr. Marsh, who just started in the role Monday, November 4, after wrapping-up 30 years of service as Indiana State Veterinarian – the state’s top-ranking animal health leader.

Despite more than six decades of research in the field of neuroscience, many functions of the brain — the most complex organ in the human body — remain a mystery. Recent research conducted in the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Bindley Bioscience Center revealed that scientists are one step closer to understanding the process that activates and deactivates specific proteins within our cells. This breakthrough could one day lead to enhanced treatments that may slow down or perhaps reverse the advance of neurogenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis.

With the start of the new work week on Monday, November 4, Dr. Bret Marsh began serving as the new leader for the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. His appointment as Dean and Veterinary Hospital CEO was announced October 24, on the eve of his retirement as Indiana State Veterinarian and head of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, which concluded a career in public service that spanned 40 years. With just a weekend break between roles, Dr. Marsh wasted no time assuming his new responsibilities Monday morning, and today shares an introductory message with members of the PVM Community.

Members of the Purdue Veterinary Medicine community had the opportunity last week to congratulate and say goodbye to a dedicated and much appreciated alumnus as he prepared to take on an exciting new role. Dr. Chad Brown (PU DVM 2001) concluded his role as director of the Purdue Veterinary Nursing Programs Friday, November 1, and transitioned to an exciting new career opportunity as executive director of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

This fall marked the start of a new chapter in the life of Purdue alumnus and staff member John Fisher who joined the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Office of Admissions and Recruitment as the Admissions Process Manager. In his new role, John will facilitate the DVM admissions process for the admissions committee while also recruiting for the DVM and Veterinary Nursing programs.

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s ongoing efforts to emphasize and provide opportunities for Purdue Veterinary Medicine students to study abroad as part of their veterinary education are bearing fruit, and those results were on display recently at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Global Engagement Fair. Held in the Veterinary Medical Library in Lynn Hall October 18, the evening reception and program highlighted expanding global engagement opportunities and increasing levels of participation in study abroad options available to both DVM and veterinary nursing students.
