Annual PVM Equine Wellness Forum February 7 Features Enlightening Horse Health Presentations and Demonstrations

Even though the cold of winter has settled in, thoughts will turn to horses and horse health Saturday, February 7, as the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine once again hosts its ever-popular Equine Wellness Forum at Lynn Hall on the Purdue campus in West Lafayette. The all-day continuing education program will feature insightful presentations and engaging demonstrations designed for horse owners and equine industry professionals.

Registration for the forum remains open until February 5 for those planning to attend in-person, and until February 6 for those opting to participate virtually. On-site registration in Lynn Hall also will be available with credit card the day of the event. Attendees must be at least 18 years old.

The college hosts the Equine Wellness Forum each year to bring together horse owners, equine professionals, and industry experts for a day of education, networking, and insight into equine health and wellness. Attendees will gain valuable insights on a wide range of horse health topics, from essential preventative care to the latest advancements in veterinary medicine. Additionally, live demonstrations will afford an up-close look at practical skills and real-world applications. Tours of the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital also will be available for attendees following the last presentation.

Speakers include equine specialists on the Purdue Veterinary Medicine faculty as well as other experts who are College of Veterinary Medicine alumni. Presenters and their topics include:

Camilla Jamieson, BVMedSci, BVM & BVS, DACVIM (LAIM), Clinical Assistant Professor of Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) – “Equine Insurance: What You Need to Know to Protect Your Assets”
Erin Wilson (PU DVM 2008), Equine Field Veterinarian for Cargill Animal Nutrition and practicing equine veterinarian in central Indiana at the McDavitt Veterinary Clinic – “Nutrition is Medicine: Functional Ingredients in Equine Feed”
Amy Peoples (PU DVM 1998), Professional Services Veterinarian – “Equine Osteoarthritis and Chondroprotective Therapies”
Morgan Johnson, DVM, DACVO, Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology – “Ophthalmology Eye Emergencies”
Dr. Jurica Trsan, DVM, DACVIM (LAIM), Visiting Assistant Professor of Large Animal Medicine & ECC – “EPM”

The program begins with opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. followed by the first presentation 15 minutes later. During lunch, in-person attendees will be able to rotate through demonstrations of bandaging, emergency skills, and a horse on the high speed treadmill. The last presentation is scheduled to conclude at 4:20 p.m., with the Veterinary Hospital tour to follow.

These are among the 172 innovations created by Purdue University researchers for which the Purdue Research Foundation (PRF) received patents in the 2025 calendar year from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, reflecting Purdue’s status as a global leader in protecting and promoting intellectual property.

New Staff Members Join Department of Comparative Pathobiology

Two administrative assistants, Heather Fell and Amanda Scheurich, recently joined the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB).

Dr. Darryl Ragland Named as Purdue Veterinary Medicine Extension Director

Purdue Professor of Food Animal Production Medicine Darryl Ragland has been selected as the director of extension for the College of Veterinary Medicine. In that role, he will oversee the activities of the college’s extension service, which shares practical applications of Purdue research with livestock producers in Indiana and around the world, and enables Hoosier farmers to raise animals using healthy and sustainable livestock production practices.

Purdue Veterinary Alumnus Jeffrey Harker Receives Indiana Pork Award for Meritorious Service

Indiana Pork recently presented awards to individuals who have dedicated time to advancing the swine industry and one of the recipients is well known to Purdue alumni for his career as a swine practitioner. Dr. Jeffrey Harker of Frankfort, Indiana, received the Indiana Pork Industry Meritorious Service Award.
