Dr. Hayna is a board-certified theriogenologist dedicated to educating students and providing clients the highest quality of reproductive care for mares and stallions. Whether you have years of breeding experience, or this is your first time, we are here to support you and help you learn along the way.
Our services are available to patients both inside and outside the Purdue University Equine Hospital. To schedule an appointment for your animal, please call our reception staff at 765-494-8548 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
In case of emergency, call the same number and tell the operator that you have an animal emergency. The operator will then provide your information to the clinician who will return your call.
Normal receiving hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with appointments scheduled at 9:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. We provide emergency care for sick or injured animals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Frequent pregnancy monitoring is important to minimize the risk of a mare aborting a fetus. Trans-rectal and trans-abdominal ultrasound can be used to diagnose issues such as placentitis and premature placental separation. If your mare is diagnosed with one of these issues, she is considered “high risk” and needs to be supported with a treatment protocol.
In the event of a Dystocia, we have emergency staff available 24/7. We have board-certified surgeons and anesthesiologists available for c-sections and board-certified internists to care for the compromised foal.
Artificial insemination allows for a higher conception rate by closely monitoring the mares reproductive cycle and ovulation patterns as well as thorough evaluation and careful timing and handling of the semen.
