I have been asked to be a proctor, what do I have to do?

As a proctor, you will administer exams and ensure academic integrity during exams. Proctors are required to provide a student with a quiet place to complete the exam. The student should not have access to resources during the exam unless instructed otherwise by the course instructor. Most of the exams are computer based. The student may bring their own computer or utilize a computer you provide. No special software is required.


Passwords for exams are sent to proctors at the beginning of each term. Proctors may not delegate exam monitoring or give passwords to anyone else who is not registered as a proctor for the student. Proctors should enter the password when prompted to do so in Blackboard and may not give the passwords directly to the student.

How much time does it take to be a proctor?

Most courses have 2-5 exams per term. Most exams will have a time limit that is communicated by the instructor at the beginning of the term. Once the password is entered and all access to other resources has been restricted, the proctor should monitor the student to insure academic integrity and honesty.

Why do I have to fill out paperwork to be a proctor?

The paperwork from the Purdue VTDL program is used to collect contact information each term and to remind the proctor of the importance of the task they are undertaking for the student and the program.

Can I delegate the proctoring to another clinic employee?

Proctors may not delegate exam monitoring or give passwords to anyone else who is not registered as al proctor for the student.

Mentors

I have been asked to be a mentor, what do I have to do?

A mentor can only be a veterinarian or a credentialed veterinary technician. A mentor is the coach or guide that assists a student to become proficient in the technical skills required as a veterinary technician. As a mentor, you are the eyes and ears for the Purdue VTDL program. Utilizing the clinical mentorship logbooks, mentors ensure that a student is performing specific hands-on skills to the standards and criteria set by Purdue.


For most tasks, a video must be submitted showing the student completing the task according to Purdue's criteria. It is important for both the student and the mentor to be familiar with the criteria for successful completion of each task. While Purdue recognizes that there are different ways to accomplish the tasks, all students in the program are evaluated using the same criteria. The Purdue VTDL program instructors must give final approval regarding successful task completion.

How much time does it take to be a mentor?

Being a mentor can take some time, but the end result is that a mentor may have a veterinary technician who will be proficient, job ready, and familiar with the practice's policies, procedures, and staff. The specific time and level of involvement varies based on the tasks and student's level of experience. There can be several mentors in a practice to assist in sharing the load.

What does my practice have to have for a student to complete a clinical mentorship?

The clinical mentorships take place in a veterinary facility that meets the VTDL program’s requirements. Each clinical mentorship has a different set of requirements based on the tasks required for that mentorship. The requirements for each mentorship are located in the facility certification document specific to that mentorship. These documents are located within each clinical mentorship link located here. The facility requirements include equipment, supplies and sometimes the species or types of cases necessary to complete the tasks.

Why do I have to fill out paperwork to be a mentor?

There are several legal documents that need to be completed prior to a student registering for a clinical mentorship. The three that pertain to a mentor are:

  • Facility certification document: This document assures that all equipment, supplies, and cases are available for the successful completion of all tasks.
  • Clinical mentorship contract: This document is an agreement between the veterinary facility, the student, and Purdue. It states the practice will provide the student with the opportunity to practice and acquire the entry-level hands-on skills as outlined in the logbook for the specific mentorship.
  • Supervisor agreement: This document is filled out by each person who will oversee specific mentorship task completion for the student.

The student may add anyone as a TouchNet Authorized User. Once added, you may pay your student's bill.
