The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine will recognize two more graduates as Distinguished Alumni in September during the 2024 Purdue Veterinary Conference. One honoree is Dr. F. Claire Hankenson, of the DVM Class of 1997. The other is Dr. Kelly G. Whitesel, of the DVM Class of 1972.

Akston Biosciences Corporation, which is dedicated to accelerating the biologics revolution in Animal Health, and Purdue University have announced a strategic partnership to co-develop an anti-cPD-L1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) immunotherapy to treat cancer in dogs. The underlying technology was developed at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Purdue Institute for Cancer Research (PICR).

Dr. Michelle Tucker, Purdue Veterinary Medicine assistant professor of large animal surgery, received special recognition by her alma mater, the Texas A&M University School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS). Dr. Tucker is one of seven Texas A&M VMBS alumni recognized in May at the college’s 2024 Outstanding Alumni & Rising Star Awards Ceremony.

A stunning, expansive mural celebrating the human-animal bond and the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s strengths, traditions and hallmarks now graces the previously plain wall in the hallway connecting Lynn Hall with the new David and Bonnie Brunner Small Animal Hospital. Commissioned last year by then Dean Willie Reed, the mural was dedicated April 26, 2024 during a ceremony attended by faculty, staff, students and friends of the college, including those who actually helped with the painting.

Dr. Doris Hughes-Moore (PU DVM ’73) recognizes the importance of preserving and honoring history. Throughout her career, the Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna has honored the legacy of her own family and that of other Black families who paved the way for her progress. She’s also cognizant of her own role in fostering Black excellence in the next generation.

As Dr. Willie Reed prepared to step down June 30 after serving 17-and-a-half years as dean of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, he received many congratulations from well-wishers, and a very special kind of recognition from the Purdue University Board of Trustees. To honor his loyalty and service to Purdue, the veterinary medicine profession and the state of Indiana, the trustees approved renaming the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory building as the Willie M. Reed Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at their meeting June 7.

Mother’s Day 2024 had extra special meaning for families of the graduates in Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s Class of 2024, as the College of Veterinary Medicine hosted the annual Graduation Celebration and Oath Ceremony in the Purdue Memorial Union.
