PVM Alumna Receives Prestigious ACVS Award

This year’s American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) Surgery Summit featured the announcement of the recipients of a trio of prestigious awards, and one of the award winners is a Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna. Dr. Karen Cornell (PU DVM ’88; PhD ’98) was selected by the ACVS Board of Regents as the recipient of the 2024 Al and Carolyn Schiller Distinguished Service Award, which was presented at the conference October 24 in Pheonix, Arizona.


Purdue Veterinary Medicine Alumnus Kyle Shipman Named Interim Indiana State Veterinarian

With the announcement last week that Indiana State Veterinarian Bret Marsh will become the new dean of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Kyle Shipman, a Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumnus, has been named interim Indiana State Veterinarian. Dr. Shipman will start serving in that role as of November 2, 2024. The decision was made in order to fulfill the duties of the office until members of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) can appoint a permanent successor to Dr. Marsh.


Week of Special Events Celebrates Contributions of PVM’s Veterinary Nurses

Recognition and appreciation were emphasized this week in Lynn Hall as the College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated Veterinary Nursing Week (known nationally as Veterinary Technician Week).  The college hosted daily events to show appreciation for the important role that veterinary nurses play as vital members of the veterinary team.  Across the college, people were encouraged to take time this week to say thank you to PVM’s veterinary nurses, whether in clinics, labs, or the classroom, and to reflect on their significant skills and tireless efforts that are so important in providing excellent, compassionate veterinary care for animals.


In Memory: Dr. Lawrence Stauffer (PU DVM ’67)

The Purdue Veterinary Medicine community is saddened to learn that a Purdue Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Lawrence W. “Doc” Stauffer, of Delphi, Indiana, passed away Sunday, September 29. He was 87.


Annual Purdue Veterinary Conference Brings Together Alumni, Students, Staff and Faculty

A festive atmosphere pervaded a week of learning and special events at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s annual conference for veterinarians and veterinary nurses. Held September 17-21 on Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus, the program attracted more than 850 registered participants. Attendees included veterinary professionals, Purdue students, staff and faculty, exhibitors and presenters.


Upcoming Purdue Veterinary Conference Features Keynotes on Wellness and Diversity

The 2024 Purdue Veterinary Conference will continue an important tradition of offering keynote sessions on Wellness and Diversity. Another conference highlight will be the annual Stockton Lecture on current issues affecting the Veterinary industry.


Upcoming Purdue Veterinary Conference to Feature Presentation of Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine will recognize two more graduates as Distinguished Alumni in September during the 2024 Purdue Veterinary Conference. One honoree is Dr. F. Claire Hankenson, of the DVM Class of 1997. The other is Dr. Kelly G. Whitesel, of the DVM Class of 1972.

The Purdue Veterinary Medicine community is deeply saddened by the passing of a member of the DVM Class of 1978, Dr. Richard Peter Chaille, of Anderson, Indiana, who died August 1, 2024.


Plans Take Shape for 2024 Dr. Skip Jackson Dog Jog Next Month!

The first Black woman to earn a DVM degree at Purdue University, Dr. Doris Hughes-Moore, attributes her success to the sacrifices made by her ancestors

Dr. Doris Hughes-Moore (PU DVM ’73) recognizes the importance of preserving and honoring history. Throughout her career, the Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna has honored the legacy of her own family and that of other Black families who paved the way for her progress. She’s also cognizant of her own role in fostering Black excellence in the next generation.
