A longtime Purdue Veterinary Medicine faculty member and administrator will apply his experience, expertise and dedication to the veterinary medical profession at the national level as he begins serving as chief of academic affairs, research and accreditation for the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Dr. Jim Weisman’s appointment to the position was announced by the AVMA Wednesday, January 29.

The Purdue Veterinary Medicine community is deeply saddened by the passing of a distinguished alumnus and national leader in veterinary medicine, Dr. Timothy (Tim) Boosinger, of Auburn, Alabama, who died January 27, 2025, after a valiant fight against pancreatic cancer and its complications. He was 74.

The Purdue University Veterinary Hospital’s ophthalmology team recently conducted a life-changing surgery for Prince, a six-year-old white tiger residing at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary (BPAS) in Albion, Indiana. The procedure marked a significant step in restoring the tiger’s vision, which had been severely impaired due to poor breeding practices and inadequate care in his earlier years.

When the clock struck 8:00 a.m. on Monday, November 4, a new dean of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine was seated at the desk in the Dean’s Office ready to begin a new chapter in the life of the college where he earned his DVM degree 40 years earlier. Dr. Bret Marsh began his new role just as he concluded a career as Indiana State Veterinarian and head of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health.

Indiana’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory supports animal agriculture in the state by partnering with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health for both surveillance and outbreak testing, and foreign animal disease investigations including Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza testing in both birds and dairy cattle. The numbers help tell the tale of the impact of this state resource, which consists of the newly named Willie M. Reed ADDL in West Lafayette and the Heeke ADDL in Southern Indiana.

Known by the acronym AgSEED, the Agricultural Science and Extension for Economic Development program is an internal competitive grants system of the Purdue University College of Agriculture that focuses on advancing Indiana’s leadership in plant and animal agriculture and rural growth, especially through entrepreneurial initiatives. This year, three Purdue Veterinary Medicine faculty members are among 17 recipients of 2025 AgSEED grants.

The Purdue Veterinary Medicine community is saddened to learn of the passing of an alumnus, Dr. Baron Brocksmith of Sullivan, Indiana, who died Monday, January 6, 2025. He was 57.

Since a dog is “Man’s Best Friend,” it’s no surprise that Santa would be sure to include time for a visit with some friendly pups in his crowded schedule during this special time of year! And so, Santa indeed showed-up last Friday, December 6, at the festive display that features a variety of holiday decorations on the ground floor at the main east entrance to Lynn Hall, to be met by an enthusiastic troupe of Canine Educators who seemed all too anxious to share their wish lists! Plenty of other furry friends of PVM students, staff and faculty got in on the act as well!

The Office of Research has announced the appointment of a Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumnus, Dr. Patrick Sharp, as assistant vice president for animal resources and attending veterinarian at Purdue, effective Jan. 6, 2025. Dr. Sharp also will serve as clinical professor of comparative pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

More than 300 Indiana pork producers gathered this week in Noblesville, Indiana for the 2024 Midwest Pork Conference, where they had the opportunity to interact with representatives of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. The Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and Purdue University Farm Animal Hospital were highlighted at the conference’s trade show, which featured more than 50 vendors and served as a center of activity for pork producers, veterinarians, legislators, and industry leaders.
