Veterinary Nursing Academic Standards

I. The academic standing of students in the Veterinary Nursing Program leading to the degrees of Associate in Applied Science and Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing shall be determined as set forth in this document. 

II. Definitions:

Scholastic Indices

• The semester GPA is an average determined by weighting each grade received during a given academic session by the number of semester credit hours in the course. 
• The cumulative GPA is a weighted average of all grades received as an undergraduate student. In the case of a repeated course, only the most recent grade received shall be included in the cumulative GPA. 

Weighted Indices

• The indices are determined by the University’s procedures in which grades have the following weights in index points: A+=4.0, A=4, A-=3.7; B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7; C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7; D+=1.3, D=1.0, D-=0.7; and E, F, and IF=0. Non-weighted grades or ones not used in determining the indices are I, PI, IN, IU, W, WU, WN, P, N, S, and U. The index is calculated by multiplying the number of hours of weighted grades by their respective weights, adding these products, and dividing the total by the total number of credit hours of weighted grades.

Grades of Failing (F), not passing (NP) or unsatisfactory (U): These grades may be given for the following conditions: 

• Failure to achieve minimal objectives of a course.
• Academic dishonesty (refer to Regulations Governing Student Conduct, Disciplinary Proceedings, and Appeals).

University Academic Notice 

• A student pursuing an associate or baccalaureate degree shall be placed on notice as defined below. 
• During notice, the student has the opportunity to demonstrate ability to continue in the program.

Academic Session

• Shall be defined as one of the following: fall semester, spring semester, or summer session.

Separation from the University

• The process by which a student is separated from Purdue University.

Separation from the Program 

• The process by which a student is separated from the Veterinary Nursing Program. A separated student is no longer considered a Veterinary Nursing AAS or BS degree seeking student. 

III. Academic requirements for graduation

The faculty requires that all candidates for the specific degree will have met the following requirements:

• Associate in Applied Science
  • Achieved passing grades or established credit in all courses required for graduation.
  • Achieved a minimum cumulative index of 2.0.
• Bachelor of Science
  • Achieved passing grades or established credit in all courses required for graduation.
  • Achieved a minimum cumulative index of 2.0.

Academic Notice (Revised Fall 2023 by the University Faculty Senate) 

• A student at Purdue University shall be placed on academic notice if his/her fall or spring semester or cumulative GPA at the end of any fall or spring semester is less than a 2.0.  
• A student on academic notice shall be removed from that standing at the end of the first subsequent fall or spring semester in which he/she achieves semester and cumulative GPAs equal to or greater than 2.0.  
• Any grade change due to a reporting error will result in a recalculation of the GPA and determination of notice standing. 
• Academic standing will not be assessed in summer sessions.

Separation of Students for Academic Deficiency 

• A student on academic notice shall be separated from the University at the close of any fall or spring semester in which his/her semester and cumulative GPA is less than a 2.0.
• Any grade change due to a reporting error will result in a recalculation of the index and determination of separation status.

Readmission

• A student who is academically separated from the University for the first time is not eligible to enroll for at least one fall or spring semester. A student who is academically separated for the second time is not eligible to enroll for at least one year.

UNIVERSITY NOTICE AND SEPARATION POLICY RUBRIC 

• IF: Semester GPA or Cumulative GPA is < 2.0 = NOTICE
• IF: On notice and both, Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA are < 2.0 = SEPARATION
• IF: On notice and Cumulative GPA is < 2.0 but Semester GPA is > 2.0 = NOTICE
• IF: On notice and Semester GPA is < 2.0 but Cumulative GPA is > 2.0 = NOTICE

Relative to required courses of the Veterinary Nursing curriculum, a student shall be separated from the Veterinary Nursing Program under the following conditions: 

• Receipt of F, NP, WF, or WN in any required School of Veterinary Medicine course (courses from SVM departments: CPB, BMS, VM, VCS) to be credited towards graduation and a cumulative GPA less than 2.5, or 
• Students who have an academic session index below 2.0 in any two consecutive semesters. 

A student who has received a F, NP, or WN in any required College of Veterinary Medicine course (courses from PVM departments: CPB, BMS, VM, VCS) to be credited towards graduation and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater must: 

• repeat the course(s) within one academic year unless otherwise prescribed by the Veterinary Nursing Committee, and 
• receive a grade of C or better in the repeated course.
• if these requirements are not met, the student will be separated from the Veterinary Nursing Program.

Relative to failing required courses taught by other Purdue Schools/Colleges, a student shall be delayed in receiving the appropriate degree until credit is attained and the criteria of Section III are met.

Actions upon infraction of College of Veterinary Medicine’s Student Code of Conduct 

• A student may be separated from the Veterinary Nursing Program for any infraction of the College of Veterinary Medicine Student Code of Conduct

IV. Readmission

Any student who has been separated and desires readmission must petition the Veterinary Nursing Program Director and/or Veterinary Nursing Committee. The facts relevant to readmission will be reviewed by the Director and/or the Veterinary Nursing Committee and recommendations will be made to the Dean or his/her designee for his/her consideration in ruling on the re-admissibility of the petitioner. Special conditions relative to course, grades,or other standards of performance may be specified for readmission. Readmission may also be refused due to limited space. 

V. The provisions of this document shall be effective for the fall semester 2010 and thereafter. University Notice and Separation academic requirements were changed by the University Faculty Senate effective Fall 2023.
