Services

In case we are not able to see you as soon as you would like, please be aware of additional counseling services available to PVM students here.  *Please note we do not make appointments on weekends or University holidays.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling can provide a safe space where you can explore, clarify and make desired changes in different areas of your personal and professional life. Counseling sessions are typically 45 minutes long. Students seek counseling for a wide range of issues, including:

  • adjustment and transitions to the academic program or to the professional world
  • culture shock
  • the fallout of perfectionism
  • racial- and other identity-based trauma
  • relationship issues
  • imposter syndrome
  • communication skills
  • compassion fatigue
  • increasing self-confidence
  • identity development
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • stress management
  • grief and loss
  • body image
  • homesickness

To make a counseling appointment, email pvmwellbeing@purdue.edu with your availability. The more options you provide, the sooner we may be able to find a time which matches our schedule.

Academic Counseling

Academic counseling helps address issues which directly impact academic or clinical work performance. The counselors can help with:

  • time and stress management
  • test anxiety
  • improving concentration
  • adjustment to new academic and professional demands

To make a counseling appointment, email pvmwellbeing@purdue.edu with your availability. The more options you provide, the sooner we may be able to find a time which matches our schedule. For further support with developing your study skills, please contact the PVM Learning Specialist, or schedule an appointment with him.

Referrals can be made to the Disability Resource Center for documented disabilities affecting academic performance.

Mediation

Mediation helps you and your partner, friend, colleague, or roommate address issues related to:

  • communication
  • boundary setting
  • conflict management

Together you can identify and negotiate your needs and expectations for the relationship. Practicing new strategies for self-expression, and hearing each other’s needs will likely strengthen the relationship, while supporting your personal growth and wellbeing.

Mediation typically entails 1 - 2 meetings. To make a mediation appointment, email pvmwellbeing@purdue.edu with your availability. The more options you provide, the sooner we may be able to find a time which matches our schedule.

Consultation

The academic and professional environment is a social arena which can present with many complex interpersonal issues. The counselors are available for brief consultation for students and faculty. Consultation can be useful in helping you identify how to:

  • approach someone you are concerned about
  • open up communication about a difficult subject or in an intimidating context
  • resolve conflicts
  • check in for self-assurance and validation

To make a counseling appointment, email pvmwellbeing@purdue.edu with your availability. The more options you provide, the sooner we may be able to find a time which matches our schedule.

Referrals

Our counselors can provide referrals for services we do not offer, including:

  • medication management
  • comprehensive ADHD evaluation
  • learning disability assessments
  • students needing accommodations for documented disabilities
  • more intensive or longer-term care

If you are seeking medication in particular, please see CAPS Psychiatry. You will need a referral from a therapist to schedule an appointment for medication at CAPS.

Emotional Support Animals

We sometimes receive requests for documentation for an Emotional Support Animal (ESA). Please note that while we honor the comfort found in companionship with a pet, ESA assessments and evaluations are outside the scope of the services we can provide. Please be aware in the State of Indiana, Emotional Support Animals are only allowed for those who have a documented disability as defined by the ADA.

Extreme caution and due diligence is strongly recommended when accessing any online resources which claim to "easily certify you for an emotional support animal for a fee," as these resources may be fraudulent.
