One Health Film Festival Features Purdue Veterinary Medicine One Health Research

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine has a longstanding commitment to One Health research and education. So it was natural for the college to agree to participate in a film festival orchestrated by an organization it is a member of called the Clinical and Translational Science Award One Health Alliance, or COHA.

The alliance is comprised of veterinary schools partnered with medical colleges through a National Institutes of Health Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA). COHA’s mission is to advance the understanding of diseases shared by humans and animals. The alliance leverages the expertise of physicians, research scientists, veterinarians, and other professionals to find solutions for medical problems and address the well-being of humans, animals, and the environment. The goal is to capitalize on One Health opportunities that accelerate translational research.

In conjunction with One Health Day last fall, the alliance initiated a plan to boost awareness by hosting an on-line film festival showcasing the great One Health work being done by the COHA veterinary schools. Recently, the videos created by Purdue and the dozen other colleges that responded to COHA’s request were posted together on the COHA website for the world to see.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s three minute video spotlights research in comparative oncology, virology, and epidemiology as examples of vital areas of one health scholarship. The story of PVM’s One Health research is told by three faculty members: Dr. Wendy Beauvais, assistant professor of epidemiology and public health; Dr. Michael Childress, the Evan and Sue Ann Werling Professor of Comparative Oncology; and Dr. Suresh Mittal, Distinguished Professor of Virology.

The video was produced by the Lafayette area freelance team of Kat Braz and Charles Jischke, with guidance, input and support from Kevin Doerr, director of public affairs and communications; Nathan Dell, assistant director of communications; and faculty members Harm HogenEsch, Tim Lescun, and Sandy San Miguel.
