Inclusive Excellence Week Facilitates Discussions about Diversity at PVM

The talk was given by Ralph Amos, former president and CEO of the Purdue Alumni Association.

The week of Martin Luther King Jr. Day was filled with a variety of events for the PVM family, organized by the College’s chapter of VOICE (Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment), as part of its third annual Inclusive Excellence Week January 20-23. VOICE is a student-run organization that aims to increase awareness, respect, and sensitivity to diversity among all individuals and communities in the field of veterinary medicine.

The Purdue VOICE chapter established Inclusive Excellence Week as a way to increase community engagement around issues that are central to the organization’s mission. VOICE Chapter President Maya Patterson, a member of the DVM Class of 2023, said Inclusive Excellence Week gives everyone in the College a closer look at diversity and inclusivity. “Our College is one of the most diverse veterinary schools in the country, so it is important that people understand how to be inclusive towards all the people who are different from themselves.”

This year’s Inclusive Excellence Week events began with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 20. Several PVM students participated in the University-wide event that honored King’s legacy by deploying Purdue volunteers to help at local community action agencies. The next day, Tuesday, January 21, VOICE and PVM’s Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion coordinated arrangements for a PVM group to see the movie “Just Mercy” at the Lafayette 7 Theater. The movie depicts Bryan Stevenson, a renowned civil rights attorney, fighting to free a wrongly-convicted prisoner on death row. On Wednesday, January 22, Marian Vasser, executive director of diversity and equity at the University of Louisville, gave an invited presentation on the topic of Implicit Bias during a “Lunch and Learn” event. The week’s line-up of activities concluded Thursday, January 23, with a presentation about Intersectionality at a similarly-styled event featuring former president and CEO of the Purdue Alumni Association Ralph Amos.

“We had greater numbers of people at our ‘Lunch and Learn’ events than ever before, so I would definitely say this year’s Inclusive Excellence Week was a success,” said Maya. “I loved Marian Vasser’s session on Implicit Bias and the way Ralph Amos approached the topic of Intersectionality,” Maya commented. “He talked about diversity in a way that helped people realize that everyone is diverse because nobody is the same. It is possible for people who look like everyone else to still feel out of place and it is important to recognize that.”

Even though Inclusive Excellence Week is over, another “Lunch and Learn” program is coming-up next week. On Tuesday, February 4, VOICE and SAVMA Purdue are hosting a “Lunch and Learn” presentation by veterinarian Diarra Blue about Diversity in Veterinary Medicine at 12:30 p.m. in Lynn 1136.

With the conclusion of the summer season rapidly approaching, faculty and staff at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine were treated to a taco luncheon on Friday, August 14 in appreciation of their excellence and dedication throughout the year. Reception honors visiting Japanese DVM and veterinary technology students

Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s partnership with two veterinary schools in Japan was the basis for a celebratory reception at the end of last week, as the college honored visiting students from Kitasato University and Rakuno Gakuen University. The eight member delegation included four DVM students and a faculty member from Kitasato University and two veterinary nursing students and a faculty member from Rakuno Gakuen University. The reception on Friday morning, August 14, served as an informal farewell and included a brief recognition program when each of the Japanese visitors received a commemorative certificate.

ADDL and CPB Department welcome new pathology residents and intern

A trio of veterinary graduates started their pathology residencies at Purdue Veterinary Medicine this summer while a fourth veterinarian began a pathology internship in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology. This newest class of students pursuing post-DVM training in pathology includes Purdue veterinary alumni and graduates of universities abroad.

PVM Team Shares Collaborative Approach at National Advancement Conference

When alumni and donors choose to invest their time, talents, and resources in the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, they typically are not focusing on departments or organizational charts—they're thinking about the college they love. That simple idea was the foundation of a presentation delivered by Julia Wickard, executive director of the Purdue Veterinary Alumni Association and constituent liaison, and April Shepherd, PVM’s senior director of development, at the Association of Veterinary Advancement Professionals (AVAP) Annual Meeting, which was held July 8-10, just prior to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Annual Convention in Anaheim, California.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine and Purdue Football Share Bullish Outlook at Summer Event

Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Bret Marsh, DVM, recently attended the Purdue Football Coaches Celebration at McGraw’s Purdue Chop House in West Lafayette, where he connected with new Purdue Head Football Coach Barry Odom. The event, hosted by McGraw’s owner Todd McGraw, also featured an opportunity to meet “Odom,” the Purdue Beef Angus Bull that serves as the latest symbol of Boilermaker pride.

Recognition Ceremony Honors VCS Residents, Graduate Students, and Purdue Veterinary Hospital Interns

More than 100 faculty and staff of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) and the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital (PVH) gathered at Lafayette’s Thomas Duncan Hall on Thursday, June 26 for the 2025 Resident and Intern Recognition Ceremony. The historic venue was a wonderful place to host this annual event that honors and celebrates the accomplishments of the VCS and PVH residents, interns, and graduate students who are completing their programs this summer.
