The Purdue Veterinary Medicine community is saddened to learn of the passing of an alumnus, Dr. Baron Brocksmith of Sullivan, Indiana, who died Monday, January 6, 2025. He was 57.

Born and raised in Knox County in Indiana, Dr. Brocksmith earned both his BS and DVM degrees at Purdue University in 1990 and 1994, respectively, after which he returned to Knox County to go into private practice. He cared for countless animals at his veterinary clinic in Vincennes.

Beloved as a father, brother, son and husband, Dr. Brocksmith is remembered for his generosity and wisdom that will live on in the lives he touched and the many stories he shared. Outside of his work as a veterinarian, Dr. Brocksmith was known for his love of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. His stories from cherished family hunting and fishing trips were legendary, and often shared with clients and friends.

Dr. Brocksmith met his wife, Angela, while attending Purdue, and he was very proud of their three children, who were the source of much joy and pride throughout his life. His passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of those who knew him.

Holmes Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements, which will include a visitation tomorrow, Saturday, January 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Mariah Creek Christian Church, 9366 East Oaktown Road, Oaktown, IN 47561. A private family service will follow.

Summer Break Signals Start of Summer Research for Purdue Veterinary Scholars

A feast of classic Indiana picnic food marked the traditional kick-off for the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Scholars Summer Research Program. The annual program provides an opportunity for Purdue veterinary students as well as undergraduate students from Purdue and other universities to experience what it is like to conduct clinical and basic science research as they work with a faculty mentor to carry out a summer research project.
