Deadline Today for Purdue Employees and Students to Document Vaccination or Accept Surveillance Testing

During the Fall 2021 semester, Boilermakers can choose to protect Purdue either by getting fully vaccinated with an approved vaccine and submitting valid proof by today, August 13, or by participating in routine surveillance testing, which could be as frequently as weekly, and contact tracing beginning August 23.

Students and employees in any of the following three categories will be required to participate in routine surveillance testing, possibly as frequently as weekly:

  • Individuals who choose not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (excluding employees designated as 100% remote).
  • Individuals who choose not to submit proof of vaccination to the university.
  • Individuals who receive a vaccine that is not recognized by the Protect Purdue Health Center.

Employees designated as critical to the continuity of core university operations (e.g., police, fire, medical, utility operators and others) who choose not to be vaccinated will be required to continue to participate in weekly surveillance testing.

Those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are asked to submit proof by today, August 13, at vaccine.purdue.edu to be excused from surveillance testing. A list of approved vaccines is available at protect.purdue.edu. Employees and students who are fully vaccinated after August 13 should submit proof of vaccination at vaccine.purdue.edu to be excused from future surveillance testing. Allow approximately two weeks to be removed from the surveillance testing pool.

Those who have chosen not to be vaccinated against COVID-19 should watch their purdue.edu email for instructions on how and when to report for surveillance testing.

Anyone with a positive COVID-19 result on file with the Protect Purdue Health Center will be excluded from surveillance testing for 90 days after the test date.

In addition to this defined strategy, contact tracing, data and insights will be utilized to supplement routine surveillance testing with targeted testing in any potential hot spots on an as-needed basis.

Top tier biology journal publishes PVM study that unlocks secrets of a drug-resistant fungal pathogen, which causes serious infections in humans

Though the name “Candida auris” is far from a household term, public health experts know it well because the multi-drug-resistant fungal pathogen, which causes serious human infections, has been classified as an urgent threat by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Antibiotic Threats Report (2019). Dr. Shankar Thangamani, Associate Professor of Microbiology and University Faculty Scholar in the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Comparative Pathobiology, is researching C. auris, aided by a 2.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). New research findings, just published in Nature Microbiology, show how C. auris adapts and evades the immune system.

In Print: ‘Translational Research Methods for Tauopathies’

A just-published 300-page volume edited by Jessica Fortin, Purdue assistant professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Basic Medical Sciences, provides a significant new resource for researchers studying a group of neurodegenerative diseases known as tauopathies. “Translational Research Methods for Tauopathies” provides detailed protocols intentionally selected to serve as a basis for research laboratories seeking to further treatments for such debilitating neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer’s and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

It’s Almost Here!

Though the annual Purdue Veterinary Conference is almost upon us, there’s still time to register and take advantage of this time-honored College of Veterinary Medicine fall tradition that combines excellent continuing education with fun opportunities for reconnecting with colleagues and classmates, networking, and learning about the latest veterinary trends and products. The 2026 Purdue Veterinary Conference takes place September 23–26 on the Purdue University campus. The annual event has something for everyone, from veterinarians to veterinary technicians, faculty, staff and students.
