My area of expertise is Parasitology/Protistology and host-pathogen interactions, in particular molecular and biochemical parasitology of protists, including Acanthamoeba and Neoparamoeba species, Toxoplasma gondii,  and host immune responses. 

I am currently leading on projects investigating microbial interactions with the environment and the understanding of antimicrobial resistance in the environment.

My current work is funded by UKRI (NERC), industry and charities and addresses specifically UN SDGS 3, 14, 15.

Areas of Interest

Applied environmental microbiology, antibiotic resistance genes as emerging contaminants, opportunistic pathogens in premise plumbing, environmental implications of nanotechnology, biomolecular tools, sustainable water infrastructure, microbiome of the built environment.

Devendra grew up in a rural community in Western India. He was trained as a veterinarian at Bombay Veterinary College. He practiced in mixed animal, and poultry medicine in clinical and industrial setting before pursuing academic career path in veterinary clinical microbiology and infectious disease research. As a graduate student, Devendra worked on the epidemiology of poultry salmonellosis and bovine tuberculosis. Later, he pursued post-doctoral trainings at Chonbuk National University College of Veterinary Medicine, South Korea, and at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Devendra served as an Associate Professor of veterinary microbiology, Caroline Engle distinguished professor of infectious disease research, and an Associate Chair of DVM education at Washington State University.

Devendra has served on numerous regional, national, and international committees and working groups. Devendra is a member of the USDA-NIFA NC1202 multi-state committee on enteric diseases of food animals: enhanced prevention, control, and food safety, the Conference for Research Workers in Animal Diseases, the American Society of Microbiology, and the Poultry Science Association. Devendra has served as a member of the research oversight committee of a multi-institutional research project on a Syst-OMICS approach to ensuring food safety and reducing the economic burden of salmonellosis. He is also an associate editor of Zoonoses and Public Health and Veterinary Sciences.

John M. Allen, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCCCP, FCCM, FCCP is an associate dean in the UF College of Pharmacy and a clinical associate professor at the college’s Orlando campus. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Allen joined the college in 2018. Dr. Allen’s professional areas of interest include health equity, antimicrobial stewardship in the intensive care unit, antibiotic dosing in sepsis, and treatment of multi-drug resistant infections in critically ill patients.

Dr. Allen graduated with his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL. He then completed a PGY-1 residency, followed by a PGY-2 Critical Care residency at Tampa General Hospital, in Tampa, FL. Dr. Allen is a dual board-certified pharmacist in critical care, and pharmacotherapy.

Dr. Allen is an active member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists and the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists and has been appointed to committees within all of these organizations. In 2017, Dr. Allen received the prestigious honor of induction as a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, which honors individuals whose achievements and contributions demonstrate personal commitment to critical care excellence, a distinction at the time of his induction bestowed upon seven pharmacists in the state of Florida.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Allen has held a variety of diverse administrative experiences including serving as a pharmacy clinical coordinator, pharmacy residency program director, and director of infectious diseases pharmacy for a 16-hospital system. In his free time, Dr. Allen enjoys watching anything with four wheels going fast, traveling, and spending time with his wife and three children.

Dr. Mindy Anderson is a Veterinary Clinical Pharmacist that teaches pharmacology for our veterinary students and on campus veterinary nursing students. Dr. Anderson is also a registered veterinary technician that graduated from the Purdue University Veterinary Technology program in 2003. She worked in private practice as well as taught in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for 11 years before going back to school to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2018, followed by a one-year residency to specialize in Veterinary Pharmacy. Dr. Anderson also works in the Purdue Veterinary Hospital consulting on medication utilization for both large and small animals. Outside of work Dr. Anderson enjoys watching her two daughters play volleyball, riding horses and spending time with friends and family.

Research

Following postdoctoral work, Dr. Bush spent 35 years in the pharmaceutical industry where she began studying beta-lactamases, enzymes in pathogenic bacteria that cause resistance to penicillins and other beta-lactam antibiotics. Her scientific teams identified and/or developed the marketed antibiotics aztreonam (Azactam®), piperacillin-tazobactam (Zosyn®), levofloxacin (Levaquin®), doripenem (Doribax®), and ceftobiprole (Zeftera®). She also worked with medicinal chemistry teams to discover six novel agents that entered human clinical trials. Her research focused on the mechanism of action of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and beta-lactamases. She has authored multiple publications describing the classification of these enzymes.

After returning to IU in 2009, she joined the Biotechnology program and established a laboratory to characterize beta-lactam resistance mechanisms in central Indiana healthcare facilities, in collaboration with the IU School of Medicine Pathology Laboratory. Her IU lab has conducted contract research for pharmaceutical companies to characterize the antibacterial activity of new investigational drugs against these resistant bacteria. Six of the agents, ceftolozane-tazobactam, ceftazidime-avibactam, plazomicin, eravacycline, imipenem-relebactam, and cefiderocol have gained FDA approval.

Research Overview

Professor Gielda’s area of research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria, and microbial factors that lead to transmittance between hosts. Recent research utilizes Serratia marcescens as a model organism, an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen with robust intrinsic and developed antimicrobial resistance.

I am an associate professor of Civil Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering at Purdue University. My research focuses on the application of biotechnologies in engineering systems and my recent projects include development of molecular microbiology techniques to evaluate antibiotic resistant bacteria in natural and urban environments, production of cost-effective biofuels, electrochemical filtration with nanomaterials, and indirect and direct potable reuse. Currently I teach wastewater treatment process, environmental biotechnology, design project, and direct potabilization. Previously I was an assistant professor of Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where I taught wastewater microbiology, topics in environmental biotechnology, environmental engineering principles, and design project. Prior to joining NUS, I was a consulting engineer at Carollo Engineers at California and conducted various consulting projects on UV disinfection, emerging contaminant removal, and cost-effective technologies for water reclamation. I am a licensed Professional Engineer (Civil Engineer) in California.
