One common question from individuals considering a career as a veterinary technician, or vet tech, is whether the salary is sufficient to support a comfortable lifestyle. So, can you live off being a vet tech? The answer to this question can vary widely depending on factors such as geographical location, lifestyle, and personal financial obligations.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2023, the median annual wage for vet techs was $43,740. This means that half of all vet techs earned more than this amount, while half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $30,180, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $59,310.
However, a vet tech salary can fluctuate based on several factors. Vet techs who specialize in a specific area of veterinary medicine, such as dentistry, anesthesiology, or emergency and critical care, often earn more than their general practice counterparts. Similarly, vet techs with several years of experience typically earn more than those just starting out in the profession.

Geographical location also plays a significant role in determining salary. Cost of living varies considerably from region to region, and salaries typically reflect this. For instance, vet techs in urban areas or states with a high cost of living, like California or New York, often earn more than those in rural areas or states with a lower cost of living.
Whether a vet tech salary is sufficient to live on also depends on personal financial obligations and lifestyle choices. This can include factors such as housing costs, student loan payments, family obligations, and personal spending habits. Keep in mind that other sources of income may help mitigate these expenses as well.
While many vet techs do live off their salaries, it's important to consider the various factors that can influence income and expenses. Before choosing any career path, it's wise to do research, consider your lifestyle and financial needs, and make a budget to see if the average vet tech salary aligns with your financial goals.
