The Purdue University Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) for Translational Biomedical Sciences fosters diversity in the biomedical sciences. It is a one-year post-baccalaureate program that provides in-depth research experience, graduate coursework, professional development, and career planning. Through a team mentoring approach, we strive to help participants develop a path for admission to a PhD, DVM-PhD, or MD-PhD program and a successful career in biomedical research.

PREP Highlights

  • PREP Scholars receive a minimum stipend of $27,000 with access to health insurance
  • Mentorship for research, academics, professional development, and career planning
  • Individualized activities aligned to Purdue PREP Scholar's goals
  • Location: West Lafayette, Indiana
  • Program dates: Early June – Late May 

Training Components

Research

  • Engage in laboratory rotations followed by a 10-11 month mentored research experience
  • Obtain training in laboratory safety and responsible conduct in research (RCR)
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs

Academic

  • Enroll in upper-level undergraduate or graduate level coursework
  • Learn about the graduate school application process

Community & Resiliency

  • Interact with Purdue graduate students in biomedical science as well as across disciplines
  • Engage in social activities led by peer mentors
  • Create a bridge between past and present experiences

Professional Development and Career Planning

  • Explore biomedical research-related careers
  • Prepare an individualized development plan (IDP) to map out future academic and professional goal
  • Develop skills in written and oral communication
