Clinical Mentorship Experiences

Are you looking to build a rewarding career in veterinary nursing while balancing flexibility and hands-on experience? Purdue University’s Veterinary Nursing Distance Learning (VNDL) program is designed with you in mind, blending online coursework with real-world clinical mentorship to ensure comprehensive training and skill development. Here’s what you can expect when you join our program.

Clinical Mentorships

Our VNDL program pairs online learning with clinical mentorships that allow you to apply technical skills at a local veterinary clinic under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian or credentialed veterinary technician. These mentorship experiences are designed to help students meet the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) requirements for proficiency in performing all required skills.

  • Hands-on Learning: Perform tasks at your place of employment or through a volunteer arrangement with a qualified veterinary facility.
  • Comprehensive Documentation: Log and document skills through various methods such as narrated videos and other objective submissions, all reviewed by Purdue instructors. View a sample logbook.
  • Mentorship Course Flexibility: Mentorships can be undertaken throughout your coursework as long as prerequisite courses are completed. Some may even be taken concurrently with required classes.
  • Guided Evaluation: Ensure your work meets AVMA standards through thorough documentation and adherence to guidelines provided in your mentorship logbook.

VNDL Rabies Vaccination Policy & Information

Please visit the VNDL Rabies Pre-exposure Vaccination Policy and Information site for information about the policy, where to find the vaccine, and potential assistance programs.

Fast Track and On-Campus Labs for Enhanced Training

To complement mentorships, Purdue University offers both on-campus and Fast Track labs at various locations nationwide. These labs provide VNDL students the opportunity to complete mentorship tasks with support from DVMs or credentialed veterinary technicians. By participating, students can progress in their studies without video submissions, as evaluations are conducted on-site.

  • Nationwide Access: Opportunities across multiple states for convenience.
  • Complete Equipment Setup: Labs provide animals, equipment, and supplies.
  • Supportive Supervision: Immediate feedback from qualified veterinary professionals.
