Understanding the potential income in your chosen career field is an essential part of planning for your future. For prospective veterinary technicians, or vet techs, salary can vary significantly from state to state. So, how much do vet techs make in each state?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2023, the median annual wage for vet techs was $43,740. This means that half of all vet techs earned more than this amount, while half earned less. However, this will vary significantly by geographical location as some areas have higher cost of living which usually results in higher wages and areas with lower cost of living may have lower wages. The image below shows the annual mean wage for each state, which is the overall average of salaries.

Salaries can vary within each state depending on factors such as specialization, years of experience, and the specific city or region where you work. As mentioned, states with a higher cost of living typically offer higher salaries, but this does not necessarily translate into a higher standard of living when costs such as housing and food are taken into account.
As you consider the vet tech salary in each state, it's also important to look at the job market and opportunities for growth in your field. States with a larger number of veterinary practices or a growing pet population may offer more opportunities for vet techs.
