When Purdue University’s Office of Research honored the accomplishments and innovative ideas of a host of researchers this week, several Purdue Veterinary Medicine scholars were among those recognized. At a ceremony Wednesday, November 14, in the Purdue Memorial Union North and South Ballrooms, the annual Seed for Success Acorn Awards were presented to Purdue Principal Investigators (PIs) and co-PIs who secured research awards of $1 million or more for a single proposal in fiscal year 2024.

With the start of the new work week on Monday, November 4, Dr. Bret Marsh began serving as the new leader for the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. His appointment as Dean and Veterinary Hospital CEO was announced October 24, on the eve of his retirement as Indiana State Veterinarian and head of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, which concluded a career in public service that spanned 40 years. With just a weekend break between roles, Dr. Marsh wasted no time assuming his new responsibilities Monday morning, and today shares an introductory message with members of the PVM Community.

With the announcement last week that Indiana State Veterinarian Bret Marsh will become the new dean of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Kyle Shipman, a Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumnus, has been named interim Indiana State Veterinarian. Dr. Shipman will start serving in that role as of November 2, 2024. The decision was made in order to fulfill the duties of the office until members of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) can appoint a permanent successor to Dr. Marsh.

Purdue University Provost Patrick Wolfe announced yesterday (Thursday, October 24) that Dr. Bret Marsh, Indiana state veterinarian and the state’s top-ranking animal health leader, will join Purdue to serve as its next dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Purdue University Veterinary Hospital CEO.

Recognition and appreciation were emphasized this week in Lynn Hall as the College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated Veterinary Nursing Week (known nationally as Veterinary Technician Week). The college hosted daily events to show appreciation for the important role that veterinary nurses play as vital members of the veterinary team. Across the college, people were encouraged to take time this week to say thank you to PVM’s veterinary nurses, whether in clinics, labs, or the classroom, and to reflect on their significant skills and tireless efforts that are so important in providing excellent, compassionate veterinary care for animals.

As the Purdue United Way Campaign entered week three Monday, the university put the spotlight on the College of Veterinary Medicine’s United Way Campaign Champion, Angela Pickett, who serves as executive assistant to the dean. That’s because Purdue United Way Campaign Director Lisa Duncan wanted to share Angela’s personal story that highlights how Purdue employees’ support for United Way can truly make a difference in the Lafayette-West Lafayette community.

The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine welcomed an international visitor this week who traveled half-way around the world to share a presentation with veterinary students entitled Conservaton of Gorillas through the One Health Approach. Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, from Uganda, was a 2023 finalist for the Indianapolis Prize, which is awarded by the Indianapolis Zoo and is considered the world’s leading animal conservation award.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine has received the national Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. Presented by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, the award recognizes U.S. health colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. As an award recipient, the college will be featured, along with 70 other recipients, in the November/ December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine’s signature annual conference for Veterinarians and Veterinary Nurses kicks-off Tuesday, September 17 and continues through Saturday, September 21, with hours of engaging continuing education sessions, special events, keynote presentations, and the annual Dr. Skip Jackson Dog Jog. In total, the conference offers more than 100 sessions, an Exhibit Hall with vendors displaying the latest products, and up to 25 Continuing Education credits. A faculty member in the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB) now holds a professorship named for an accomplished veterinary pathologist and Purdue alumnus. The appointee is Associate Professor Abbigail Cox, who was formally recognized August 15 during the annual CPB Departmental retreat held at the Beck Agricultural Center. Her appointment to the Dr. William O. Iverson Professorship in Comparative Pathology was effective July 1.
