When the clock struck 8:00 a.m. on Monday, November 4, a new dean of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine was seated at the desk in the Dean’s Office ready to begin a new chapter in the life of the college where he earned his DVM degree 40 years earlier. Dr. Bret Marsh began his new role just as he concluded a career as Indiana State Veterinarian and head of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health.

A husband-wife team of veterinary oncologists with expertise in tumor ablation devices is now part of the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the Evan and Sue Ann Werling Comparative Oncology Research Center. Dr. Nick Dervisis and Dr. Shawna Klahn started in their new roles as Purdue associate professors of comparative oncology August 12 as part of the university’s Moveable Dream Hires program.

As any upperclassman knows, getting off to a good start is pivotal for a first year veterinary student’s successful “launch” into veterinary college. That’s why Purdue Veterinary Medicine offered a program for incoming students in the fall called “Launch! DVM 2028.” The annual onboarding program introduced members of the incoming DVM Class to College of Veterinary Medicine resources, policies and programs.

Indiana’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory supports animal agriculture in the state by partnering with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health for both surveillance and outbreak testing, and foreign animal disease investigations including Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza testing in both birds and dairy cattle. The numbers help tell the tale of the impact of this state resource, which consists of the newly named Willie M. Reed ADDL in West Lafayette and the Heeke ADDL in Southern Indiana.

Being the first to achieve something reflects a commitment to excel. The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s commitment to excel at positively impacting communities resulted in a first at Purdue University when the college was announced as Purdue’s first Engaged College in August. The university’s Engaged College Program (ECP) is a new initiative developed by Purdue’s Office of Engagement to support colleges with the resources to focus on building, sustaining, assessing, bringing awareness to, and rewarding quality community engagement activities.
