All is Well with Plans for the Equine Wellness Forum

It’s “virtually” time for the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s annual Equine Wellness Forum, which this time will be held in an all virtual format beginning February 6, 2021. Registration is now open for the annual event, which is designed to inform horse owners and equine industry professionals about horse health issues ranging from basic preventative healthcare to the latest medical advancements.

This will be the first virtual Equine Wellness Forum.  The program will be presented as an initial half-day seminar, followed by four sessions offered every Wednesday evening.  Attendees can earn up to eight continuing education credits.

The opening seminar on February 6 is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The program will begin with a welcome and introductory remarks by Purdue Veterinary Medicine Dean Willie Reed.  He will be followed by several special speakers addressing a range of topics:

  • “40 years of Equine Surgery,” presented by Dr. Steve Adams, professor of large animal surgery
  • “Equine Supplements,” presented by Erin Wilson, of Nutrena
  • “Horse-Proofing the Barn,” presented by Dr. Amanda Farr, clinical assistant professor, Purdue University Veterinary Hospital Equine Field Service
  • “Neck and Back Pain in the Horse,” presented by Dr. Sarah Waxman, visiting assistant professor, Equine Field Service

The subsequent sessions to be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., will cover these additional topics:

  • February 10:  “Laminitis: What’s New?” by Dr. Tim Lescun, associate professor of large animal surgery
  • February 17:  “Sinus and Guttural Pouch Disease,” by Dr. Jan Hawkins, professor/section head of large animal surgery
  • February 24: “Muscle Disease,” by Dr. Stacy Tinkler, clinical associate professor of large animal internal medicine
  • March 3: “When the Filters Fail: Kidney and Liver Disease,” by Dr. Sandra Taylor, associate professor of large animal internal medicine

Summer Break Signals Start of Summer Research for Purdue Veterinary Scholars

A feast of classic Indiana picnic food marked the traditional kick-off for the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Scholars Summer Research Program. The annual program provides an opportunity for Purdue veterinary students as well as undergraduate students from Purdue and other universities to experience what it is like to conduct clinical and basic science research as they work with a faculty mentor to carry out a summer research project.
