Dr. Nelly Elshafie is a research scientist at Purdue University’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL), working on molecular diagnostics and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Dr. Elshafie plays a pivotal role in developing and validating innovative diagnostic assays for veterinary and zoonotic pathogens. Her work focuses on the application of advanced molecular techniques, such as quantitative PCR (qPCR), real-time PCR, targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS), and whole genome sequencing (WGS), to identify and characterize infectious agents in both domestic animals and wildlife. Dr. Elshafie’s infectious disease research extends beyond diagnostics to pathogen surveillance and epidemiological studies. She has investigated the prevalence of hemotropic Mycoplasmas (hemoplasmas) in wildlife species, contributing to a broader understanding of zoonotic pathogen transmission in urban and conservation settings. Her work has provided critical insights into vector-borne diseases, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and emerging infectious threats at the human-animal interface, supporting global One Health initiatives.
