Shyamkumar T.S., a Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB) graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Viju Pillai, received the USDA–NIFA Merit Award at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR) in Indianapolis, Indiana. He also delivered a platform presentation describing his research during the meeting. The SSR Annual Meeting was held July 19-22 at the JW Marriott.
The USDA–NIFA Merit Award recognizes high-quality trainee research that benefits or enhances scientific understanding of reproduction in agriculturally important species. Award recipients are selected through a competitive evaluation of research abstracts submitted for presentation at the SSR Annual Meeting.
Shyamkumar’s research focuses on the generation and sustained culture of embryonic and trophoblast stem cells from livestock species using chemically defined culture conditions. His work also investigates the ability of these cells to produce blastocyst-like structures under laboratory conditions. During his platform presentation, Shyamkumar discussed the development of this chemically defined culture system and its potential use as an experimental model for studying early embryonic and placental development. Trophoblast cells play essential roles in embryo implantation, placental formation, embryo–maternal communication, and the establishment of pregnancy.
The use of a chemically defined medium allows researchers to precisely control the culture environment and reduce variability associated with undefined biological components. The generation of blastocyst-like structures from cultured stem cells may also provide a useful model for investigating early developmental processes and factors that influence reproductive success across mammalian species.
Shyamkumar conducted the research under the mentorship of Dr. Pillai, who is an assistant professor of anatomic pathology in the CPB Department and a pathologist at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). Dr. Pillai’s laboratory focuses on stem cells and developmental biology in mammals.
