CPB Graduate Student Shyamkumar T.S. Receives USDA–NIFA Merit Award at Annual Meeting of Society for the Study of Reproduction

Shyamkumar T.S., a Department of Comparative Pathobiology (CPB) graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Viju Pillai, received the USDA–NIFA Merit Award at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction (SSR) in Indianapolis, Indiana. He also delivered a platform presentation describing his research during the meeting. The SSR Annual Meeting was held July 19-22 at the JW Marriott.

The USDA–NIFA Merit Award recognizes high-quality trainee research that benefits or enhances scientific understanding of reproduction in agriculturally important species. Award recipients are selected through a competitive evaluation of research abstracts submitted for presentation at the SSR Annual Meeting.

Shyamkumar’s research focuses on the generation and sustained culture of embryonic and trophoblast stem cells from livestock species using chemically defined culture conditions. His work also investigates the ability of these cells to produce blastocyst-like structures under laboratory conditions. During his platform presentation, Shyamkumar discussed the development of this chemically defined culture system and its potential use as an experimental model for studying early embryonic and placental development. Trophoblast cells play essential roles in embryo implantation, placental formation, embryo–maternal communication, and the establishment of pregnancy.

The use of a chemically defined medium allows researchers to precisely control the culture environment and reduce variability associated with undefined biological components. The generation of blastocyst-like structures from cultured stem cells may also provide a useful model for investigating early developmental processes and factors that influence reproductive success across mammalian species.

Shyamkumar conducted the research under the mentorship of Dr. Pillai, who is an assistant professor of anatomic pathology in the CPB Department and a pathologist at the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). Dr. Pillai’s laboratory focuses on stem cells and developmental biology in mammals.

“This recognition is a testament to Shyamkumar’s hard work, scientific curiosity, and commitment to advancing stem cell biology,” Dr. Pillai said. “His research contributes to our broader goal of developing innovative stem cell-based systems to better understand early embryonic and placental development in mammals.”

The recognition that comes with the award highlights the contributions of Shyamkumar and the Pillai laboratory to stem cell and developmental biology and underscores the potential value of their research for advancing the understanding of reproduction and early development in livestock and other mammalian species.

American Board of Veterinary Toxicology Honors Purdue Professor and ADDL Senior Veterinary Toxicologist Steve Hooser

Dr. Steve Hooser, DVM, PhD, DABVT, professor of veterinary toxicology at the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and senior veterinary toxicologist for the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL), has received the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology's (ABVT) 2026 Service Award.  Given in recognition of a career that has shaped the field of veterinary toxicology for more than four decades, the award was announced July 13 at the ABVT Annual Business meeting held in Anaheim, California, in conjunction with the AVMA Convention 2026.

New Class of Veterinary Hospital Interns and Pharmacy Resident Welcomed to PVM

A total of 13 new interns and a new veterinary pharmacy resident began their advanced training in the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital this summer. The group of interns includes nine veterinarians who are completing a small animal rotating internship and four who are doing a large animal rotating internship. In addition, a pharmacy school graduate began the one year Wasson Veterinary Pharmacy Residency program, which is jointly offered by the Purdue Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy.
