JAMIE GLICK

Why did you choose the Purdue Veterinary Technology Distance Learning (VTDL) program?

I viewed course lists from several distance learning programs that were AVMA accredited and felt that Purdue's program offered the most detailed and organized course plan. I also was particularly interested in the help that Purdue's program offered on accomplishing mentorships that would otherwise be difficult for me to complete. For example, the large animal and lab animal workshops provided me with the opportunity to complete the necessary courses by getting the hands on experience that I would have struggled to find at the small animal general practice where I work. I was interested in getting a thorough education and was confident that a school with as strong of an academic reputation as Purdue would be able to provide me with that experience.

What is it like to take a VTDL course?

Depending on the class it can be challenge when you have a question.  You are not in the classroom where you can ask a question and get an immediate response.  Because most questions are asked in an email or on a discussion board, you have to wait on a response from the instructor.   Relationships develop differently when you are a distance learning student.  They are developed by email and discussion groups.

What was your favorite course?

I can't say that I have just one favorite course because I have enjoyed several of them. I'd have to say that Clinical Pathology, the Large Animal Nursing courses, Lab Animal, and Anesthesia were among the ones I enjoyed the most. I really enjoyed the Large Animal courses because I work in a small animal practice so I found the different concepts of large animal medicine to be very interesting.

Did the program's faculty and staff help you?

You get great academic support - any question you may have about the material is answered promptly and always very competently. You also get deadlines and clear objectives set by the instructors that help assure your continued progress in learning. In the mentorships, the support has gone beyond that and taken the form of positive suggestions to improve your techniques in a way that is targeted to you in the context of your practice. It's very tailored to your situation. Lastly, your academic adviser will help you stay on target to achieve your degree.
