CPB 86900 Veterinary Public Health and Zoonoses

A survey of fundamental topics on veterinary public health, preventative medicine, and zoonoses. The topics will discuss the methods for prevention and control of veterinary public health risks in animal and human populations. Food safety and foodborne diseases, with particular emphasis on foods of animal origin will be discussed. Risk assessment of occupational and environmental health conditions to which veterinarians are likely to be exposed in the training and work places will also be covered. Additionally, the human-animal bond and applied aspects of ethology will be discussed.

CPB 88300 Public Health Clinical Rotation

This rotation will emphasize interactions with public health and regulatory agencies to provide a basic understanding of the essential roles veterinarians play in public health, disease control, and food safety. Community-oriented activities will promote outreach and allow students to practice risk communication skills as well as become familiar with key partners who will aid them in addressing public health issues in practice. Roles in occupation health, environmental health, zoonotic diseases, pre- and post-harvest food safety, carcass disposal, disease reporting, therapy animal use, epidemiologic investigations, infection control, animal transportation and movement, emergency preparedness, and global health will be discussed.
