PVM Boasts Five Winners in Purdue Health and Disease Poster Competition

A total of five Purdue Veterinary Medicine graduate students, from the Comparative Pathobiology and Basic Medical Sciences departments, are winners in the Purdue University Health and Disease: Science, Technology, Culture and Policy graduate student poster competition, which was held Monday, March 28.  The competition featured five categories, and prizes were given for first, second and third place.  The PVM graduate students won awards for posters in three of the categories: Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Diseases; Prevention and Wellness; and Cancer.  The other categories were Neuroscience, and Obesity and Related Diseases.

The event organizers commented, “What an amazing group of students and research posters in the poster competition.  Congratulations to all the student awardees and mentors!”  The PVM Award recipients and their advisors, listed by category of competition, are:

Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Diseases:

  • First place:  Haroon Mohammad; Advisor: Dr. Mohamed Seleem, Department of Comparative Pathobiology
  • Second place:  Ahmed Diab; Advisor: Dr. Ourania Andrisani, Department of Basic Medical Sciences

Prevention and Wellness:

  • Third place:  Kerri Rodriguez; Advisor: Dr. Marguerite O’Haire, Department of Comparative Pathobiology


  • First place:  Farzaneh Atrian Afyani, Advisor: Dr. Sophie Lelièvre, Department of Basic Medical Sciences
  • Third place:  Joselyn Cruz Cruz; Advisor: Dr. Susan M. Mendrysa, Department of Basic Medical Sciences

Prizes of $500, $300 and $150 were awarded for first, second and third place finishers, respectively. The poster competition was sponsored by the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, Engineering, Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Pharmacy, Science, and the Purdue Polytechnic Institute.
