February 19, 2016

A member of the Purdue DVM Class of 1975, Dr. Philip Borst, of Indianapolis, is the recipient of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented at the organization’s Annual Meeting February 6. The award recognizes an IVMA member for cumulative service and accomplishments benefiting the profession, organized veterinary medicine, and the community.

After earning his Purdue DVM degree, Dr. Borst joined his father in private practice at the Shelby Street Animal Clinic, where he continues to work today as owner and veterinarian.  He has been active in organized veterinary medicine throughout his career, serving as a member of both the IVMA and the Central Indiana Veterinary Medical Association (CIVMA).  Over time, he has held all of the officer positions in both organizations, in addition to serving on many committees.

Dr. Borst also has demonstrated long-term loyalty to his alma mater, serving in various roles involving Purdue University, including as a past member of the Purdue Veterinary Medicine Alumni Liaison Committee and the Dean’s Advisory Board.  He also served on the President’s Council of Advisors under three Purdue University presidents.  Additionally, he received the Purdue Alumni Association’s National Citizenship Award, and in 2009, the Diamond P Award, which is the highest honor given by the Purdue athletic department.

Dr. Borst also is involved in many political, civic and sports activities.  He is co-chairman of the Big 10 men’s and women’s basketball tournaments and was a member of the 2012 Super Bowl bid committee.  He also is a member of the Indianapolis Airport Authority, the Indiana Sports Corporation, and the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition, he served 28 years on the Indianapolis City-County Council, including a term as president, before retiring from that responsibility.
