Colorful Van Ready to 'Role' for PVM Engagement Program

SEPA van

It’s hard to miss the new van parked in the lot across Harrison Street from Lynn Hall, home of Purdue Veterinary Medicine.  And that’s the point.  The Ford van was delivered earlier this month complete with appropriate graphics for the "This is How We 'Role'" engagement partnership program funded by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs, a component of the National Institutes of Health.  Through this after-school role-modeling program, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the only veterinary medical college with a SEPA award, is leading a team of experts that will spread nationwide the message about the vital role veterinarians play in keeping people healthy.

"The van will be used to deliver the program’s curriculum to our community partners on the grant," said Dr. Sandy San Miguel, PVM associate dean for engagement and principal investigator.  The graphics on the van include messages in Spanish, since the program will be delivered in bilingual form thanks to a partnership with Purdue’s College of Liberal Arts.  "In particular, the program focuses on students who are educationally disadvantaged due to socioeconomic status, race, or ethnicity with the long-term goal of diversifying the veterinarian-scientist workforce," Dr. San Miguel said.

The curriculum incorporates interactive science and math experiences for students in kindergarten through fourth grade.  Students will learn how veterinarian-scientists develop methods to prevent and treat health conditions shared by people and their animals as they help cows with diabetes, dogs with cancer, and horses with asthma. Veterinary medical students, veterinary technology students and veterinary scientists will receive training to deliver the program, which is being developed through a collaboration among veterinarians and elementary school teachers, in a culturally responsive manner, with help from experts at Purdue and the Kingston Bay Group, an education consulting agency.  Click here for more information about the program.
