In Memory: PVM Professor Emeritus Edward Hinsman

May 20, 2016

The Purdue Veterinary Medicine family was saddened to learn of the passing of one of the College's founding faculty members, Professor Emeritus Edward (Ed) Hinsman, who died Saturday, May 14. He was 81. Dr. Hinsman came to Purdue in 1959, when the College enrolled its first class of veterinary students. He was appointed initially as an instructor of veterinary anatomy, and then was promoted to assistant professor in 1963, associate professor in 1966 and full professor in 1970. "Dr. Hinsman served with great dedication and loyalty until his retirement in 1995," said PVM Dean Willie Reed.

Dr. Hinsman earned both his BS and DVM degrees at Michigan State University in 1956 and 1958, respectively, and then earned his PhD at Purdue in 1963. During his Purdue tenure, Dr. Hinsman served as acting head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, which later became part of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, and also was an adjunct professor of anatomy for the Indiana University School of Medicine. As a faculty member who loved teaching, research and working with students, Dr. Hinsman received numerous teaching awards and was inducted into the Purdue University Book of Great Teachers. He also was honored by being included in the Wall of Fame Tribute by the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The heartfelt thoughts and sympathy of the PVM faculty and staff go out to Dr. Hinsman's family. Visitation will be held tomorrow (Saturday, May 21), beginning at 11:00 a.m., at the Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel (1184 Sagamore Parkway West), with a service to follow at noon. The family has shared that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.
