AAVMC Celebrates Golden Anniversary

The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), which represents the 35 veterinary medical colleges in the United States and Canada, launched its 50th anniversary celebration March 13, during the association’s 2015 annual conference in Washington, DC. With the theme “Fifty and Forward,” the year-long observation is designed to commemorate a half-century of creating excellence in academic veterinary medicine and also lead the way to future, greater levels of success.

The association’s 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, chaired by Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Ralph Richardson, has been working for more than a year to develop the project. “What we hope to do with this celebration is illuminate the critical role that academic veterinary medicine is playing in the modern world and build greater awareness and support for what we do,” Dean Richardson said.

During the opening ceremony, some of the major special events and communication programs that have been developed as part of the celebration were highlighted, including a six-minute video profile of the AAVMC and a 30-second television public service announcement (PSA). A painting commissioned as part of the celebration was also formally unveiled. Other plans include a special 50th anniversary edition of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education in Fall, 2015 that will examine the AAVMC’s 50-year body of work from a more scholarly perspective, and the publication of a history book by noted veterinary medical historian and former Cornell Dean Dr. Don Smith.

The year-long celebration will conclude at the March 2016 annual AAVMC Conference – the 50th year of service for the association (1966-2016). The concluding celebration will be a gala event featuring distinguished guests from throughout the profession, federal government agencies and Congressional leaders, and executives from major corporations working in animal and human health.  During the celebration, a Grand Initiative will be announced – a transformational project conceived to help the colleges and veterinary medical profession build momentum for the future.
