Indiana State Fair Puts PVM on Display

August 14, 2015

Assisted by a Purdue veterinary student, Dr. Jim Weisman performs a neuter surgery at the Indiana State Fair on a humane society pet that needs the procedure in order to be adopted.

Purdue Veterinary Medicine is in the spotlight at the 2015 Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, where a large tent on the north side of the fairgrounds houses surgery demonstrations, educational presentations and Indiana State Fair Vet Camp. The surgery demonstrations represent a cooperative effort between the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association.  For most of the State Fair’s 17 days, visitors are able to witness surgeries that are needed to prepare Humane Society pets for adoption. The surgeries are offered on a daily basis at 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., except on August 17, 20 and 22, when presentations on animal or medical topics will be given by veterinarians in lieu of the surgery demonstrations.

Several veterinary student ambassadors for the College are serving both as instructors in the Indiana State Fair Vet Camp as well as interacting with the many State Fair attendees who visit the PVM tent. Participants in the vet camp are developing even greater enthusiasm for veterinary medicine. The Junior Vet Camp, for students in sixth through eighth grades, continues from 9:00 a.m. until noon August 15-16 and 22, and from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. today, and August 14, 18 and 20. Senior Vet Camp, for students in grades nine through 12, will continue to be held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. August 15-16 and 22, as well as from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. August 17, 19 and 21.  The Indiana State Fair Vet Camp is modeled after Boiler Vet Camp. Participants get to experience various veterinary duties, including suturing and reading x-rays. Walk-in registration is welcome.  Click here to view a gallery of photos on Facebook.
