Practice Management Training is Focus of New PVM-Krannert Collaboration

July 28, 2013

The Veterinary Practice Management Program represents a new collaboration between the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and Purdue’s Krannert School of Management to provide veterinary professionals 72 hours of graduate level instruction focused on the business side of veterinary practices.  The subject matter is well known to the Krannert faculty who previously conducted the Veterinary Management Institute (VMI) in collaboration with the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) for more than 20 years.  The new collaboration between Krannert and Purdue Veterinary Medicine incorporates the strengths that were part of VMI, but targets a broader range of veterinary professionals and fosters more networking and interaction between colleagues, program faculty and alumni.

"Veterinarians and their staffs face an increasingly competitive business environment," said PVM Dean Willie Reed. "Changes range from new and expensive advances in surgical equipment and medical treatments to practice consolidations, and pet superstores. VPMP is designed to help them meet these challenges." Held on the Purdue campus, the course is divided into four modules: human resource management, accounting management, marketing, and strategic thinking. Participants follow the modules in order.  "Krannert faculty and staff have designed VPMP for veterinarians, veterinary practice technicians and the practice team manager with business decision-making responsibility," said Krannert Dean Christopher Earley. "Our goal is to help the team improve profitability, gain a competitive advantage, and ensure long-term success."

You can find out more about the program at the PVM 2013 Fall Conference, when Dr. Dick Goebel (PU DVM ’68), who was a co-founder of the original VMI, will provide an overview of the four VPMP modules during a Lunch CE session, Thursday, September 12. Additional information is available on the VPMP web page.  To view a complete news release about the program, click here.
