The online platform e<\/em>cancer<\/a>, which seeks to raise the\nstandards of care for cancer patients across the world through education,\nrecently posted a video of an interview with Dr. Sulma Mohammed, professor of\ncancer biology in Purdue Veterinary Medicine\u2019s Department of Comparative\nPathobiology.  Dr. Mohammed discussed the\nstate of cancer research in Africa and explained her passion for African cancer\nresearch that has led her to play an active role over a dozen years in a major conference\naddressing cancer on the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her video is part of e<\/em>cancer\u2019s coverage of the 12th\nInternational Conference on Cancer in Africa<\/a>, which was hosted by the African Organisation for Research and\nTraining in Cancer<\/a> (AORTIC) in Maputo, Mozambique last November. With the\ntheme, \u201cCancer in Africa: Innovation, Strategies, Implementation,\u201d the 2019\nAORTIC Conference focused on cancer control in Africa, and featured an in-depth\nscientific program with local, African, and internationally-renowned keynote\nspeakers.  Dr. Mohammed chaired a session\nduring the conference entitled \u201cCancer Biology from the Bench to Bedside.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her interview\nwith e<\/em>cancer<\/a>, Dr. Mohammed noted\nthat the conference was primarily patient-oriented.  \u201cI\u2019m an advocate for cancer research in\nAfrica. We know that in Africa we don\u2019t have much cancer research,\u201d Dr.\nMohammed explained, adding that she is advocating to have basic science\nresearch in every country on the continent. \nShe pointed out that currently, all the medicine is being developed and\ntested on people in more developed areas of the world, where people live different\nlives than people in Africa. \u201cWe need to identify our own markers, like in our\nindigenous people.  And accordingly, we\ncan develop our own medicine that can fit our own people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During her interview, which was posted on the e<\/em>cancer website February 5, Dr. Mohammed\nalso described current challenges facing cancer research in African countries,\nwhere she said treatment is valued more than investment in science.  Noting that many of the 2019 AORTIC Conference\nattendees were clinicians, Dr. Mohammed expressed her hope that more research scientists\nfrom around the world will participate in the future.  Last year was the 12th<\/sup> year that\nDr. Mohammed led a session at the conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
