The Hereford Model Dystocia Simulator, like many other animal models in the lab, was purchased through an instructional equipment grant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_9599_sm-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The cow and horse models face the camera standing side by side\" class=\"wp-image-6878\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_9599_sm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_9599_sm-353x235.jpg 353w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>The new life-size palpation cow will be kept with the horse model in the Clinical Skills Lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the model, DVM and veterinary nursing students will be\nable to learn about uterine palpation, and how to assist during a bovine\ndystocia.&nbsp; The model allows students to\npractice placing obstetric chains and manipulating abnormal calf presentations\nin the birth canal.&nbsp; This opportunity to\npractice will help students better understand techniques that can be used to successfully\ndeliver a calf during a difficult birth.&nbsp;\nAdditionally, the model has a functional udder, which gives students the\nopportunity to learn how to milk a cow or perform a mastitis test.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinical Skills Laboratory Manager Danielle Buchanan, RVT,\nVTS (SAIM) said providing students with access to a more realistic learning option\nis very important. \u201cPrior to the development of clinical skills labs in\nveterinary schools, students had to get creative if they wanted opportunities to\npractice skills.
