The college is featured, along with 49 other recipients, in the September 2019 issue of <em><a aria-label=\"INSIGHT Into Diversity (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insightintodiversity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">INSIGHT Into Diversity<\/a><\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funded by a $3.18 million federal grant from the Health\nResources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of\nHealth and Human Services, Vet Up! is designed to expand access to the\nveterinary profession for talented individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds\nand address the need for more veterinarians serving rural areas and protecting\nfood safety. The goal of the program is to fill veterinary shortage areas with\nequity-minded individuals from underrepresented populations and rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_5489-e1566229604528-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"A veterinary training session showing individuals in lab coats interacting with a cow.\" class=\"wp-image-5776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_5489-e1566229604528-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_5489-e1566229604528-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_5489-e1566229604528-238x235.jpg 238w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_5489-e1566229604528.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected by <em>INSIGHT Into Diversity<\/em> based on efforts\nto inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers\nin STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and\ninitiatives. &nbsp;Purdue Veterinary Medicine\nDean Willie Reed said receiving this award is especially meaningful for the\ncollege.&nbsp; \u201cOne of our college\u2019s\npriorities is to inspire and equip people from diverse backgrounds to pursue\nrewarding careers in veterinary medicine,\u201d Dean Reed said.&nbsp; \u201cVet Up! has great potential to increase the diversity\nof the veterinary medical profession while also addressing the serious shortage\nof veterinarians in public health and rural\/food animal practice, thereby enhancing\nthe profession\u2019s success in meeting the needs of both animals and people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purdue has the only veterinary college in Indiana and is\nhome to the Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary\nMedicine, the nation\u2019s only such center. Vet Up! leverages PVM\u2019s proven history\nof effective diversity programming and partnerships with high schools,\nhistorically black colleges and universities (HBCU), and state entities to\ndesign and deliver curricula that provide otherwise-inaccessible opportunities\nto students. National Academy consists of three programs with\na competitive selection process for admissions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vet Up! Champions is a yearlong program to prepare high school students, working adults, and undergraduate students to attain their next level of education on the path toward a veterinary medical degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vet Up! College is a summer immersion program to prepare undergraduate students to competitively apply to a veterinary medical degree (DVM) program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vet Up!
