National recognition of programs that are making a difference for all underrepresented groups in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

West Lafayette, Ind. <\/strong>– The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine\u2019s program named Vet Up!\u00ae<\/sup> The National Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) Academy for Veterinary Medicine has received the 2019 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity <\/em>magazine \u2013 the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.  The Inspiring Programs in STEM Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Vet Up!\u00ae<\/sup> The National HCOP Academy for Veterinary Medicine received the award because of its long-term goal of diversifying the veterinarian-scientist workforce, which is currently over 90% White. The college is featured, along with 49 other recipients, in the September 2019 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity<\/a><\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funded by a $3.18 million federal grant from the Health\nResources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of\nHealth and Human Services, Vet Up! is designed to expand access to the\nveterinary profession for talented individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds\nand address the need for more veterinarians serving rural areas and protecting\nfood safety. The goal of the program is to fill veterinary shortage areas with\nequity-minded individuals from underrepresented populations and rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n

Inspiring Programs in STEM Award winners were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity<\/em> based on efforts\nto inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers\nin STEM through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and\ninitiatives.  Purdue Veterinary Medicine\nDean Willie Reed said receiving this award is especially meaningful for the\ncollege.  \u201cOne of our college\u2019s\npriorities is to inspire and equip people from diverse backgrounds to pursue\nrewarding careers in veterinary medicine,\u201d Dean Reed said.  \u201cVet Up! has great potential to increase the diversity\nof the veterinary medical profession while also addressing the serious shortage\nof veterinarians in public health and rural\/food animal practice, thereby enhancing\nthe profession\u2019s success in meeting the needs of both animals and people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purdue has the only veterinary college in Indiana and is\nhome to the Center of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion in Veterinary\nMedicine, the nation\u2019s only such center. Vet Up! leverages PVM\u2019s proven history\nof effective diversity programming and partnerships with high schools,\nhistorically black colleges and universities (HBCU), and state entities to\ndesign and deliver curricula that provide otherwise-inaccessible opportunities\nto students. A longstanding partnership with the Purdue University College of\nEducation\u2019s Evaluation and Learning Research Center will assess the impact of\nthe programming on participants and the veterinary profession.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Vet Up! National Academy consists of three programs with\na competitive selection process for admissions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Vet Up! Champions is a yearlong program to prepare high school students, working adults, and undergraduate students to attain their next level of education on the path toward a veterinary medical degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Vet Up! College is a summer immersion program to prepare undergraduate students to competitively apply to a veterinary medical degree (DVM) program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Vet Up! DVM Scholars supports Purdue veterinary medical students throughout their professional degree program and prepares them for careers in veterinary shortage areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cVet Up! enables us to expand the influence of our creative\napproaches to improving the diversity of the veterinary profession,\u201d said Dr.\nSandy San Miguel, PVM associate dean for engagement and program co-leader with\nDr. Latonia Craig, PVM assistant dean for diversity and inclusion. \u201cWe have\nassembled an amazing team of collaborators and look forward to what we can\naccomplish through this new National HCOP Academy for Veterinary Medicine,\u201d Dr.\nSan Miguel said.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Dr. Craig said Vet Up! has all the right components for\nmaking a lasting positive impact on veterinary Medicine and the health and\nwell-being of both animals and people.  \u201cWe\nare very excited about the prospects for drawing a much wider array of students\nto veterinary school, and then supporting and sustaining them as they pursue\ntheir dream of becoming veterinarians. \nThrough Vet Up! we can help these individuals catch a vision for the difference\nthey can make as they expand the profession\u2019s diversity and meet the veterinary\nmedical needs in underserved regions,\u201d Dr. Craig said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe know that many STEM programs are not always recognized\nfor their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students,\u201d\nsaid Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity<\/em> magazine. \u201cWe want to honor the schools and\norganizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young\npeople who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in STEM. We\nare proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of\nhigher education and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A call for nominations for this award was announced in April\n2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
