Fear Free Handling was the focus of the Veterinary Nursing Symposium keynote lecture by Alicea Howell, , RVT, VTS (Behavior), KPA CTP, a Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna who earned her AS and BS degrees in veterinary technology in 2002 and 2003, respectively.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Two annual continuing education programs held earlier this\nyear provided valuable insights for horse enthusiasts and veterinary\nnurses.  Both the Horseman\u2019s Forum and\nthe Veterinary Nursing Symposium had strong attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dr. Alec Davern, staff surgeon at the Centaur Equine Specialty Hospital, the college\u2019s satellite facility in Shelbyville, Ind., gave a lecture on advanced imaging during the Horseman\u2019s Forum. He added a bit of humor with a graphic on a PowerPoint slide explaining that \u201cDOGS CAN\u2019T OPERATE MRI MACHINES BUT CATSCAN.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

More than 200 attendees enjoyed the Purdue University Horseman\u2019s Forum, which was held February 9, at Lynn Hall.  Youth as well as adult horse enthusiasts gathered for a full-day of exceptional educational programming and demonstrations.  Designed to educate horse owners and equine industry professionals about current horse health issues, the annual forum included information about essential equine health care topics.  Attendees came from across Indiana, as well as Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program included an acupuncture demonstration by Dr.\nJennifer Koziol, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary\nClinical Sciences, as well as a treadmill demonstration by Dr. Laurent Cou\u00ebtil,\nprofessor of large animal internal medicine and director of the Equine Sports\nMedicine Center.  Additionally, Robin\nRidgeway, co-author of the Purdue Extension publication, \u201cUnderstanding the\nHorse Trailer Rig: Steps for Transporting Horses Safely on the Highway\u201d,\npresented a trailer safety demonstration. \nA copy of the publication was provided to Horseman\u2019s Forum participants as\npart of their event registration.  The\nforum also featured lectures on leptospirosis, equine recurrent uveitis, wound\ncare, cardiology, advanced imaging, senior horse nutrition, hoof care, and\nmanaging osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Horseman\u2019s Forum was sponsored by Nutrena, Progressive\nNutrition, Dechra, Zoetis, and Haygain, which provided prizes for the giveaways\nand items for goodie bags. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following month, attendance at the fifth annual Veterinary Nursing Symposium held at Lynn Hall set a record.  More than 165 attendees came from as far away as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  The one-day program on March 24, covered a broad range of topics that were appealing to veterinary nurses working with both large and small animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual symposium is designed to provide veterinary\nassistants, veterinary nursing students, and veterinary nurses with practical\ninformation they can use in clinical practice. \nParticipants were eligible for up to 7.5 hours of continuing education\n(CE) units.<\/p>\n\n\n

After a welcome and opening remarks by Dr. Bianca Zenor,\nPurdue Veterinary Nursing Program director, the program gave participants the\nchance to choose between large and small animal tracks.  Symposium speakers featured Purdue Veterinary\nMedicine faculty and staff, as well as veterinary nurses from outside\npractices.  Small animal presentations\nincluded hospice, dentistry, emergency and critical care, anesthesiology, and cardiology.  Large animal sessions covered theriogenology,\nanesthesiology, equine asthma, and internal medicine topics.  Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna Alicea\nHowell, RVT, VTS (Behavior), KPA CTP, presented the keynote lecture for\nsymposium attendees entitled, \u201cFear Free Handling \u2013 Veterinary Care for Every\nPatient.\u201d  An afternoon communications\nworkshop was also offered as an optional session for symposium attendees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
