The event was part of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.invma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IVMA<\/a>) annual meeting. Dean Willie Reed began the celebration by emphasizing the enduring relationship that has been built between PVM and the IVMA.&nbsp; \u201cThe College has enjoyed an excellent longstanding relationship with the IVMA, and that strong partnership makes this venue a perfect place for launching our 60<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary celebration,\u201d Dean Reed said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncelebration included a performance by the Purdue Musical Organization\u2019s a\ncappella group called the \u201cVoiceovers,\u201d which also led the audience in singing\n\u201cHappy Birthday\u201d while the 60<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary cake was rolled into the\ncenter of the room to mark the milestone.&nbsp;\nThen Dean Reed returned to the podium, marveling how 60 years have passed\nsince the College opened its doors to the first class of veterinary students in\n1959.&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m sure that when our College\u2019s\nfounding faculty members started teaching that first class, the year 2019 would\nhave seemed light-years away,\u201d Dean Reed commented.&nbsp; \u201cYet, here we are, 60 years later, with much\nto be thankful for and proud of as we look to the past, and much to be excited\nabout in the future as we peer ahead at the years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2297_sm-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"A capella group The Voiceovers pictured on stage at the Kick-off celebration\" class=\"wp-image-4038\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2297_sm-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2297_sm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2297_sm-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2297_sm-352x235.jpg 352w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2297_sm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>The \u201cVoiceovers,\u201d a Purdue Music Organization\u2019s a cappella ensemble entertained the audience with heart-felt renditions of contemporary and classic favorites before leading everyone in singing \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d in honor of the College\u2019s 60th Anniversary.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dean Reed also noted how the College\u2019s 60<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary coincides with Purdue University\u2019s Sesquicentennial, which is known by the theme, \u201c150 Years of Giant Leaps,\u201d inspired by Purdue alumnus Neil Armstrong\u2019s historic statement on the moon.&nbsp; \u201cThat term, \u2018Giant Leaps,\u2019 also is fitting for our College and the veterinary medical profession,\u201d Dean Reed said. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to think about the giant leaps we have made in the last 60 years. And we recognize none of those accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication and support of faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, the Indiana legislature, and our friends and allies in the veterinary medical profession and the field of agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking to\nthe future, Dean Reed highlighted plans for a new Veterinary Teaching Hospital and\nannounced the establishment of a group of key donors to the project.&nbsp; \u201cAs our state legislators are working to\nassist us in making the new hospital a reality, we already have received 14\nprivate gift commitments to \u2018set the pace\u2019 in garnering financial support for\nthe new facilities,\u201d Dean Reed said. \u201cIn this 60<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary year,\nwe have set a goal of finding 60 Pacesetters who want to partner with us and\nleave their prints on this project through major gifts of $25,000 or more.\u201d&nbsp; Disclosing that the most recent \u201cpacesetter\u201d\njust stepped forward that week, Dean Reed encouraged the audience members to\nconsider joining the group or helping connect the College to others who might\nhave that interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day\nconcluded with a keynote speech from Purdue Veterinary Medicine alumna Karen\nCornell, who earned both her DVM and PhD degrees at Purdue and now serves as the\nassociate dean for professional programs at the Texas A&amp;M University College\nof Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. &nbsp;In her role, she has an appreciation for the\nimportance of communication and leadership in veterinary practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2298_sm-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Karen Cornell pictured with Willie Reed and Kathy Salisbury at the 60th Kick-off Celebration\" class=\"wp-image-4040\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2298_sm-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2298_sm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2298_sm-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2298_sm-352x235.jpg 352w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG-2298_sm.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>Dr. Karen Cornell (center), the PVM alumna who served as keynote speaker for the 60th Anniversary Kick-off Luncheon, pauses for a photo with PVM Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Kathy Salisbury and Dean Willie Reed.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.\nCornell\u2019s keynote speech focused on what the last 60 years have been like for the\nPurdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and what the next 60 years may\nhold as well. Looking back on the history of veterinary medicine, Dr. Cornell\nspoke about how the College has played a role in the development of the\nprofession. She noted that through hard work and dedication, veterinarians\nmoved the profession forward despite such perceived threats as automobiles\nreplacing horses and the rise of large-scale livestock operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr.\nCornell used these examples of issues that confronted the veterinary profession\nin the past as a foundation for looking forward to the next 60 years. She\nexplained that the profession is going to change fast and extensively in the\nyears to come. She also spoke with pride about being a Purdue University alumna\nbecause of Purdue\u2019s long tradition of improving diversity and inclusion.&nbsp; \u201cEighty-five to ninety percent of people have\na regular veterinarian who they prefer for two reasons \u2013 knowledge and their\nkind and compassionate approach,\u201d Dr. Cornell noted. \u201cWe need a welcoming\ncommunity that understands all people and all backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The determination to persist through any obstacle and a commitment to constant improvement enables Dr. Cornell to see a bright future for the next 60 years at Purdue University. She encouraged the College to continue to incorporate critical skill development into the curriculum as a means of bridging basic and clinical sciences.
