The dogs were there to interact with people arriving for a dramatic stage presentation that brought to life Jack London\u2019s classic tale \u201cCall of the Wild.\u201d &nbsp;The thrilling story of courage and survival penned by the famous author was presented in Loeb Playhouse at 3:00 p.m., as a multimedia adventure that included storytelling and projected images. &nbsp;An hour prior to the performance, attendees joined Purdue Convocations and the Pets for People Club in the Stewart Center lobby to learn more about the novel and to meet trained therapy dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"686\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pets_for_people2_sm-686x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Frankie the dog receives a treat from Julianna in Stewart Center\" class=\"wp-image-4001\" style=\"width:300px;height:448px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pets_for_people2_sm-686x1024.jpg 686w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pets_for_people2_sm-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pets_for_people2_sm-768x1146.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pets_for_people2_sm-157x235.jpg 157w, https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Pets_for_people2_sm.jpg 804w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 686px) 100vw, 686px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Julianna DiMichele, of the DVM Class of 2021, gives a treat to Frankie, who was adopted from the Canine Educator program and has been certified through Pet Partners as a therapy pet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the help of a grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/business\/boso\/\">Business Office for Student Organizations<\/a> (BOSO) as well as support from Purina, the Pets for People Club brings in the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/petpartners.org\/volunteer\/our-therapy-animal-program\/\">Pet Partners<\/a> (formerly the Delta Society) once per year to certify club members\u2019 pets as trained therapy animals. Throughout the year, the certified therapy pets and their owners make visits to community schools, senior care facilities, and other organizations to share the therapeutic benefits of the human-animal bond.&nbsp; The club\u2019s faculty advisors are Dr. Alan Beck, director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond and Dorothy N. McAllister Professor of Animal Ecology in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology, and Dr. Niwako Ogata, associate professor of animal behavior in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.&nbsp; Third-year veterinary student Stephanie Morgenstern serves as the club president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The presence of the\ntherapy dogs at the pre-show event was fitting, given the star of Jack London\u2019s\nwell-known novel.&nbsp; In the book, Buck \u2014\nthe offspring of a St. Bernard and a Scottish Collie \u2014 is kidnapped and put to\nwork as a sled dog in Canada\u2019s Klondike Gold Rush of the 1800s.
