Dr. Paulo Gomes, clinical associate professor of dermatology in the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine\u2019s Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, recently was recognized for co-authoring one of the most widely read articles of 2025 in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.  The publication is an online, open access, international, peer-reviewed journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article on \u201cFeline immune-mediated skin disorders\u201d, published in two-parts, was downloaded 24,175 times.  Dr. Gomes, who is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD), and coauthors Frane Banovic, DVM, PhD, DECVD, associate professor of veterinary dermatology in the Department for Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, and Karen Trainor, DVM, MS, DACVP, of Innovative Vet Path in Kansas City, received a certificate of appreciation from the Journal Editorial Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two-part article addressed how immune-mediated skin diseases in cats can be difficult to identify and manage. Dr. Gomes says affected cats may present with erythema, hair loss, scaling or crusting, and erosions with or without pruritus, and can mimic more common differentials such as hypersensitivity dermatitis and infectious dermatitis. The co-authors reviewed key conditions and clinical considerations across a broad spectrum of immune-mediated skin disease, helping clinicians approach challenging presentations with a clearer framework for differentials, diagnostic planning, and therapy. The articles encourage veterinarians to become familiar with the characteristic clinical features of immune-driven skin disorders to support early diagnosis and appropriate treatment decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
