{"id":30840,"date":"2025-08-15T12:13:37","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T16:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=30840"},"modified":"2025-08-15T14:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T18:08:15","slug":"pvm-toxicologists-warning-about-poisonous-mushrooms-aids-pet-owners-locally-and-nationally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/news\/pvm-toxicologists-warning-about-poisonous-mushrooms-aids-pet-owners-locally-and-nationally.php","title":{"rendered":"PVM Toxicologist\u2019s Warning about Poisonous Mushrooms Aids Pet Owners Locally and Nationally"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>They\u2019re known as \u201cDeath Cap Mushrooms\u201d and for good reason \u2013 Dr. Steve Hooser, Purdue Veterinary Medicine professor of toxicology and senior veterinary toxicologist at the Indiana <a href=\"https:\/\/vet.purdue.edu\/addl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory<\/a>, says they can be fatal for dogs. Dr. Hooser says the mushrooms, scientifically known as Amanita spp., have appeared in yards and fields across central Indiana.<br><br>\u201cThese mushrooms typically emerge between July and November and can be deadly to dogs of all sizes\u2014even with prompt treatment,\u201d said Dr. Hooser. \u201cThey look very similar to harmless mushrooms and can only be identified accurately by an expert. Ingesting them can cause severe liver and kidney damage within 24\u201348 hours and may be fatal.\u201d<br><br>Dr. Hooser advises pet owners to contact a veterinarian right away if their dog eats a mushroom. \u201cDon\u2019t wait\u2014early intervention is critical,\u201d he said.<br><br>To help alert pet owners, the College of Veterinary Medicine put out a social post with Dr. Hooser\u2019s advice this week and the information drew immediate and widespread attention. The information even reached a follower who saw the post on Instagram and as a result, was able to get needed veterinary care for their dog that had suddenly become sick.
